Use compressed air and a vacuum. That is your safest and best bet for cleaning it out without damaging it.
My PS3 is lying down, as you can see http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=74273 but I really don't think it makes much of a difference from a cooling standpoint so long as you keep it well ventilated.
