I would have thought that having it standing would be cooler as you have a larger surface free for the heat to escape. I keep mine lying down as if I have it standing I'm scared my cats will just knock it over... constantly.
As far cleaning is concerned I just it every week and vacuum it from time to time. If I hear the fans whirling loudly I get a magazine and manually fan the air around the console, lol.
