Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Official Halo 3 review thread

I'm disappointed to see such bullshit from sites like Gamespot who admits it's the Halo 2 formula built on and perfected... which is EXACTLY the excuse they gave for giving Metroid Prime 3 an 8.5. I f**king hate how this industry caters to media hyped games. FFXII was the moment I lost faith in the industry reviews. God this shit pisses me off, but I expected it so I guess that lessens the blow a little bit...

I agree completely, of course we went over this before in th MP3 thread. It has gotten to the point where I don't trust the online reviews (other than IGN).

I think that their advertising dollars and hype dictate what scores they give what. The reason IGN stays unbiased is they have subscription service to access content that likely pays for a good majority of the site upkeep. That's the real kicker when dealing with website based reviews, the only way they make money is advertising. If Microsoft (who controls just about everything related to computers) pays them extra then I can see them giving retarded reviews for stellar game. (higher or lower depending on the ad revenue)

Furthermore, I don't dispute the fact that Halo 3 is a stellar game. It probably deserves the scores it has gotten (for the most part), however, I think that other games should be rated with consistancy and the genre.

There! That is your final answer! 96.3%! Was that so hard? Just go to Game Rankings, and make life easier. Anyways, well done Microsoft! I know what I'm buying soon! Wow, this beat Super Mario 64... I wonder if The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, will ever be defeated... And it also beat Bioshock. Now the Xbox 360 has Gears of War, Bioshock, and Halo 3. Man, Xbox 360 is going to have a major sales boost, very, very soon, if not already!

This will be lower than Bioshock in lifetime reviews.  Bioshock's were much higher at this point, and most low review scores come later in the review process.  Over the next few weeks the score will continue to drop.  It will probably end up around 9.3 (my estimate) in the end.  Obviously a great game.

@ leo-j, you are the one who called Heavenly Sword an 8 average game.  It's in your own quote haha.  He misunderstood your bad grammar and thought you were saying 8 means an average game, and was correcting you to tell you that 8 means a good game.

I see so basicly heavenly sword (an 8 average game) has a better story than Halo 3. But was shot down because it didnt have multiplayer. Well that sucks.

If you're basing this on the arstechnica article I posted, you're just wrong.

For them, Halo 3 is a 7 with its 8-10 hours of gameplay at normal difficulty (there are another 2 levels above that), counting only the single player campaign, and none of the extra single player features. They'll also review the full game as soon as they have access to it (ie., when it shows up in stores - this was all they were given privileged access to).

Heavenly Sword, on the other hand, was found not to be deserving of a full review, and got one of their short reviews, which turned out to be a "rent" score thanks to its no more than 6 hours of gameplay. So, I very much doubt that'd beat a 7 in their scale.

You can't get off comparing a score from a single review site to the gamerankings average (of which said site isn't even a part of, thanks to its scarce reviews) and make a statment like that. According to them, Halo 3's flawed single player mode seen in isolation beats Heavenly Sword easily.

You either trust their judgment, or you don't. And if you don't, don't use their words to spin stuff your way.

There is a flood of 100/100 scores lately. Soon the media will have to up the bar to 120 :P

I agree.

I also agree that a "perfect" score shouldn't even be possible. It should only exist in theory.

"I mean, c'mon, Viva Pinata, a game with massive marketing, didn't sell worth a damn to the "sophisticated" 360 audience, despite near-universal praise--is that a sign that 360 owners are a bunch of casual ignoramuses that can't get their heads around a 'gardening' sim? Of course not. So let's please stop trying to micro-analyze one game out of hundreds and using it as the poster child for why good, non-1st party, games can't sell on Wii. (Everyone frequenting this site knows this is nonsense, and yet some of you just can't let it go because it's the only scab you have left to pick at after all your other "Wii will phail1!!1" straw men arguments have been put to the torch.)" - exindguy on Boom Blocks

Since when is 8 an average game? 8, according to GameRankings, is a "B" game. That's definitely not average.

What are you talking about? The average review is 8.1 http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/928391.asp

Ah, misunderstood you. I thought you were saying that an 8 score is average, not that HS is pulling an average of an 8.

And there's nothing wrong with a game getting a boosted score for additional features like co-op and MP. It's like a car reviewer not being able to give a higher review to a car that costs the same yet comes with leather, sunroof, power everything, etc. over a stripped down basic model. There's more added value in the purchase and for $60, there aren't many games that will offer players more over the long run than Halo 3.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the game and getting my review in on it.

With all the new additions to multiplayer, replay vids, the forge, 4 player co-op, etc. Halo 3 has set the bar for all future games that much higher. Who cares if the campaign is similar to Halo 1&2? I enjoyed each immensely and would be totally disappointed if they deviated from a proven formula for the sake of innovation and it ended up sucking. No game will have the replay value of Halo 3 and anyone who says otherwise is a jackass. Halo 2 is still one of the most played games on Xbox Live.....that is till Tuesday

Theres a good chance we can add in Mass effect very soon for that also cant wait!

Heck maybe even Lo will score that high with RPG fans

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

Yeah Mass Effect should be up there. I have a lot of faith in Bioware as a developer. I'm not sure about LO though. The previews for it have been positive, but they have also mentioned that it's pretty standard RPG fair without anything new or revolutionary, which is exactly what killed Blue Dragon's reviews. Of course JRPG fans often want that (I know I do), and the game isn't really being made for us. It's being made to try and draw in ore than 1000 units sold a week in the Japanese market.

Something that jumped out at me from the 1up review was that they were saying that it doesn't do a whole lot of new stuff (not saying that it's not great), but the thing that came out the most in that review was when they talked about online co-op and lag.

"The only drawback is every co-op game we've played over Xbox Live, whether it's two, three, or four players, has been fairly-to-incredibly laggy."

Seeing as the online co-op was a big factor with this game, I find this to be interesting.

But microsoft will improve online functionality to reduce lag as they go.  I wouldnt be surprised if they have already since this was published. They cant afford Halo 3 to lag.
