Forums - Nintendo - Paper Mario games scriptwriting - pure enjoyment for my eyes

Not so long time ago I've finished Paper Mario 2, thus finishing Paper Mario series.

And you know what? I found script in those games incrediblly well-written, surprisingly engaging and fun to read, and it actually outpaces a bunch of high-profile jRPGs, though obviously lacking in presentation level (or it's just purposely minimalistic?). Paper Mario games are heavy on text, if I'd need to read this amount of text in almost any other jRPG, I assume I'd bored to death. Goes without saying that gameplay wise Paper Mario games are as much fun as their scriptwriting. Or, maybe, it's just me who appreciates those games scriptwriting? Not a native speaker, so it's understandable if I'm missing something.

Finally, to the point. Quick question. I'd like to know who're responsible for script writing? I did found answer on my question in Paper Mario 1/2 credits (complete strangers, never heard of these guys before), but there're no info on Super Paper Mario game. Got any info?

Paper Mario: TTYD was the best-written RPG I've ever played on a console, maybe the best period, so you're definitely not alone in this.

It's not only Paper Mario but also Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi which are great games with loads of (funny) text.
I don't really like RPGs but these games are awesome.

I agree; the writing is brilliant and funny.

I disagree with your 'presentation' thing though - the difference between raw graphical power and presentation is whether it fits the game and adds to it. Paper Mario is one of the best series for doing this - TTYD took the N64 one and added so many more clever pieces of presentation surrounding paper such as the stage, the transformations and the character designs. It isn't the best looking GC game - but it is the best presented in my opinion.

@Soleron
Yep, you got the point, I barely could imagine Paper Mario game presented in a FF-like cutscene, but still... voice work at least, more animation besides mouth opening\closing? I'm not complaining though, I'm happy with current level of presentation Paper Mario games are able to offer.

//Some old hag nagging: moreover Paper Mario and some Shu Takumi writing (with Alexander O. Smith translation) in Ace Attorney are a couple of examples of relatively recent games that reminds me of old days when game story could be great regardless of any presentation (or with presentation that "fits" should I say?). Those who old enough could remember a story starring a couple of tentacles, or a story told about a clayworld, or baldy, dorky, horny middle-aged man as a main protagonist etc. Those were good writings, good stories, not cliched, not even epic.

I agree the games script are the funniest I read

I only ever played Super Paper Mario, and was more impressed with the quality of the writing than the game itself. And I loved the game.

My Games of 2011:

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Super Mario 3D Land

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception

You are not alone, all the Mario RPGs(Paper Mario and Mario&Luigi) have excellent writing.

I agree with you, and I second Ostro. and maybe Mario & Luigi's do it better than Paper Mario, because written text is minimal and the taunts alone are enough and fantastic.

it's only a pity that Mario's movement in the game is so slow, in the final "quest" (SPOILER: visiting every area again) I couldn't stand the game anymore
