Forums - Sales - What proportion of gamers are multi-console owners do you think?

I exclude PC/Mac from consideration here since so many people have PCs for things other than gaming (but including gaming), it's virtually a given that every console owner also has a PC/Mac in the house (in fact as a follow up question how many console owners DON'T have a PC/Mac?).

I think keep it within each generation too, so don't count PS1, 2 & 3 as multi-console, nor SNES, GC & Wii. I'm interesated in knowing who has 2 or more directly competing consoles from the same generation. PSP+DS=multi console too, but DS+PS3 doesn't since they are not directly competing.

I personally will only ever own one console from any generation (PS3 [soon] this gen), and am unlikely to ever own a HH (though the PSPhone may tempt me, I'd be getting it as a phone of course, that just happens to play games). However I have 2 sons, one has a DS and the other has a PSP so we are a HH multi-console house. Just not me personally.

I'm mostly looking to see whether there is any market research data to indicate how many households there are "out there" beyond the VGC/interweb community, the great unwashed, with multiple consoles. Any one know?

My household is a multiconsole owning one. Both of them actually

Both my dad and stepmom, and my real mom own a Wii each, but they are rarely used. Right now, I'm a PS3 only owner, but I plan on expanding to the other consoles once I have the cash.

Having said all that, I think maybe some 30% of current console owners will have more than one console from this generation.

This Gen - I have a 360, PS3, Wii, DS, DSlite and a PSP

I'm pretty sure there are more this gen then the previous generations due to the Wii. The Wii offers a different gaming experience so if like me you like traditional games but like to have a Wii for parties and the controls in certain games. I was reading an article a while back which stated the Wii was the best 2nd console, which is how it is for me at the moment.

In the previous 2 gens you could easily get by with just a PS1/2 and before that, most had either a Sega or a Nintendo system and fanboys would argue over which one was better... much like 360 and PS3 this gen.

This report is more than a year old.  Given that there are now two consoles at a mass market price point, I'm sure it's much, much higher now.

This is only anecdotal, but out of 11 people at work that I know to have current gen consoles, one is PS360 and one is PSWii.  One 360 owner (launch model with no problems) says he's waiting for a PS3 price drop and another is considering PS3 after 7 red ring repairs.  One of the Wii-only people will likely buy an HD console by the end of the year (probably PS3).  Both of the multi-console owners bought or received their second console in the last six months.

I would also imagine that multiple console ownership is quite high (and growing) in Japan where Wii seems nearing saturation and 360-only ownership seems unlikely.

My impression is that multi-console ownership among members of this site is much higher than for the average punter. The number of people I see with XBL + PSN banners in their sigs for example.
