Forums - Gaming - PSP VS DSI Cnet Prize fight. Guess which one wins?

@ZenfoldorVGI

I thought the comparison was PSP vs DSi two handheld gaming consoles on ALL that they could do not just games. DSi can do other things besides games can't it? They have added media capabilities to it. They have also added capabilities to download games and demos similar to what PSP has been doing for a while now.

Again, just my opinion.

I have been pretty happy with what has been available on PSP and what is on the horizon. I have not been as happy with the DS.

It could be that I had been told time and time again that DS has a far superior library and is generally a far superior handheld ... then I bought it and it was hardly any better than my GBA. Most of the games didn't even use the second screen (although things have changed since then).

Like most things an opinion is based on perception of a product.

High hopes ... not met .. worse opinion
Not high hopes ... surpassed expectations... great opinion

On a personal level, the PSP is a good machine, but it just doesn't stack up gamewise, to the DS. For every SotN port on the PSP, there are 3 equally great games on the DS. In fact, the PSP's library numbers are vastly inflated by yearly games that get meandering reviews, like Madden and MLB 05,06,07,08,09 The SHOW, ect. The best handheld games are undeniably on the DS. I mean, name the best handheld games this generation. How many are on the PSP? Phoenix Wright, EBA, Hotel Dusk. Those games are MUCH better to have on your console than the highly touted yearly entries of MLB The Show, or the latest Soccer game. Ugh. Am I wrong?

The DS like every other console is filled whit a share of sport games year after year.

Best Handheld games? thats an opinion. And there are a lot games on PSP to be compared even in casual apppeal like Patapon, Locoroco or Luminies. but yeah I also think that there are equally great games on the PSP and DS, its just a matter of preferences.

It is called an OPINION and I am entitled to have one just as you are. I do not believe that I am biased or uninformed about the DS library. The reason why my DS library is small compared to my PC or PS2 library is because there isn't much on DS that interests me. I "currently" own every single game that is in my profile. The games I have sold, lost, misplaced etc. are not there.

The fact that DS has a more variety of games available is indisputable. It has a huge list of games however, from core franchises, FF, DQ, Pokemon, zelda, mario etc. there are not many games IF you discount GBA games. All of FF and DQ games currently available are ports (discounting Tactics games).

OPINION, yes exactly why the gaming industry is horrible.

Take movies for example.  I liked the X-Men Wolverine movie better than I like the curious case of benjamin button, or 7 pounds. (all 3 great movies)  I will probably watch xmen a plenty times more at least.  I probably won't watch the other two ever again, maybe benjamin button again, but I know that those two are better movies, and if i was rating them and a movie critic i would give them a better score.  I can't be biased rating because I like wolverine and xmen and action movies over a drama.

Yet in the gaming world we would give wolverine a 9+ rating and the others like a 6 or something cause they aren't core games.   So it doesn't mean jack shit what your opinion or CNET's opinion is on which games they like or not. The DS has a huge library of great games, just because they aren't in the hardcore gamers interests they are disregarded as shovelware and don't count.

Hell I understand that the PS3 has a number of great games that it has in its library but its super small for me, so should i say that its library sucks if i review it.  NO.  I don't like shooters so all those in the library are like nintendogs to you.  And i could explain why i didn't like some of the so called great games from uncharted to heavenly sword.  And why i think they are overrated.  Just like many think bioshock is overrated because it i basically already a game on computer been out for a long time, those are cheap knock off's of other games.

The DS got a 3.7 for library? Its got so many games, how is that possible? I mean, its got your traditional platformers and RPGs, but also crazy shit like Elektroplankton and stuff like the Korg DS-10 (which I suppose technically isn't even a game lol). It's really a landslide victory in favor of teh DS> The PSP has some great stuff, but the DS just has so much more.

The only arguable advantage the PSP has in this area over the DS is games like Resistance: Retribution and Syphon Filter - shooters that aren't all that good because of the controls.

I suppose for my personal tastes the game library argument boils down to Pokemon and Prof. Layton vs Patapon. All three are amazing franchises, but its clear which side wins lol.

Wait what? Shooter controls are better on DS... if you play any FPS on DS and play it on PSP, Ds destroys it, and same for TPS games though there are few of those on DS for some reason.

By "advantage" I meant that the PSP has considerably more games in that area.

...and they control horribly.

Off the top of my head

DS:

CoD4

CoDW@W

Metroid Prime Hunters

Dementum The Ward

Goldeneye

Moon

PSP:

CoD3

Infected

MohH1&2

?

PSP owns DS in TPS games though...

There are more PSP FPSes like Coded Arm 1 and 2 neither are that great though... just saying.

I agree with Naz. I've had both and in the year before the PS3 and Wii came out I was a fiend when it came to handheld games. I had both and I loved them. The PSP has a great and underappreciated library but the DS simply outclasses it. Have yet to replace my DS though but I had fun with the last two games I played through (Phoenix Wright and FFCC).

IMO the PSP does look better though.

The "analog" on the PSP show its great design

But war... war never changes

Given that this is Cnet, I'm surprised the Xbox 360 didn't win...

My opinion is, that PSP fans wouldn't want to make a list of "best handheld games" because it would be a list with some PSP games at the top, and said list would get you flamed severely in any message forum, because said opinion is so vastly unpopular and seemingly biased, that even those who genuinelly earned said opinion are ashamed to give it. That was my point.

As far as sports games skewing the library, most of these polls use the 80 percent and up "games" to show library quality. With that logic, no phoenix wright games would be counted as "good DS games" and every sku of MLB:08 The Show or Madden would be counted on the PSP. Do you really think that is an accurate comparison of the handhelds libraries? Also, the DS doesn't have nearly as many 80+ sports titles as the PSP. Calling a metacritic count without mentioning the sports skew on the PSP is dishonest.

I think that you might believe I'm upset with your opinion. Sir, I most honestly, am not. I sprawl in delight when I see such an honest opinion, boldly presented here.

However, in the internet, we often confuse honesty with "the truth," and I'm just trying to clear that up for everyone. Just because you are giving your honest opinion, doesn't mean it's correct. In fact, most controversial "honest" opinions run contrary to generally accepted opinion.

Your opinion, for instance, is so contrary to the accepted norm, it is nearly unbelievable, and thus our mind jumps to the potential of dishonesty and biased, but you have given proof of none of those things.

The PSP has, lately, been in quite a gaming drought, while the DS has managed to release quite a string of core critical hits, such as Order of Ecclesia and Chinatown Wars, as well as a plethora of Japanese related content that the PSP has yet to, and never will see. Yet, you claim that you have not only been dissatisfied, but UNHAPPY with the releases on the DS, while AT THE SAME TIME saying you are completely happy with your recent PSP purchases, despite the afformentioned draught.

Perhaps you could explain exactly which games you disliked on your DS, and games you liked on your PSP.

As for your assumed assertion that the PSP deserved to win because of its multimedia capabilities, and not souly based on its game library, perhaps you are right. However, the question shouldn't have been framed in such a way, as a direct comparison between said game console. PSP vs DSi, indicates that we are comparing two game consoles, not two multimedia devices. Why should the PSP win because it has a MP3 player? It can't play Mario Kart DS, or Chinatown Wars. It is misleading, for the purpose of page hits, and biased towards technical specifications of the acutal machine, rather than the quality of library(which was only given ONE single characterization(try to compare home consoles with only a passing mention of game library and see what I mean), based off the afformentioned faulty assumption, that casual games don't count). It is totally bogus. Again, try comparing the Wii and the PS3 with game library only a minute consideration(2 verses 2.5 lets say), and check out the backlash.

Unlike your opinion, this article is provably based off incorrect and frankly offensive assumptions. You should see some of the CNet articles about the PS3 before you champion it.
