Forums - Sony - Is Sony going to try and secure "MGS Next" exclusivity for PS3?

except your 60$ a pop is a bit high :p more like 30$ to be conservative (and consider sales after price drops).... still a good 40M for a 10M investment :p

that makes it a 30-40M profit.... so not as expensive as you said... but still high....

and do consider the value for konami to have their team available to other things than porting... which is why I believe 20-30M is probably what Sony would have to cash out. (I said 20 earlier :p)
For MS... it's a different story, fans might not jump ship due to PS loyalty and there the overall sales might decrease.... so yeah 100M for exclusivity might be a good estimate :p

many times ports are done by a third party coding company. The actual (wholesale price) of games are usually $48 a tad higher for fast moving titles.  For price drops they typically have only gone down for 3 reasons, 1. sales for the publisher have reached their initial goal and demand is still there but it has tapered off and now its just gravy,  2. sales were completely flat and they have to unload stock (the retailer ends up being the big loser if this happens), 3. Store has an individual sale to move units to cash in on a marketing kickback agreement.

see that's what I get for cherrypicking on numbers for someone who knows more about them than me :p

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

IMO there is a pretty good chance that the next MGS and MPO2 will both be PS3/PSP exclusives respectivly...wcs we will see MGS5 going multiplat on the 360.

Oh and Ghostbusters... just one region, and not a huge title... IMO they just got lucky with that one ( meaning being in the right place at the right time ).

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

I would tend to agree with the assessment that the title will probably be a exclusive for Sony. Though I have little doubt that Sony will be held up for a serious amount of cash. Not doing so would be asinine given what exclusivity costs the developer. For the last title they may have lost up to six million units in sales.

Bring it over Kojima! MWAHAHAHAHA

Konami already said they were going full multi-platform after MGS4, that's why Kojima is off the MGS series.

Ghostbuster doesn't matter here, it was a publishing deal, not an exclusivity deal. Sony is pretty much sure not to release a game this big unless it's first party.

Anyway, I'm fairly certain Konami doesn't have to release Kojima's next game on several platforms (well, at least if it's MGS, not sure about some other game) as MGS4 was rather succesful. Besides, it seems Kojima doesn't like 360. Then again, Konami is probably pretty much all for even more profit... But I'm not sure how it would affect Konami and Kojima's relationship. And MGS isn't MGS without Kojima.

I guess it really depends on Konami/Kojima's expectations of MGS4's sales - if it met their expectations, the next one will be exclusive, if it failed their expectations significantly, the next one'll be multiplatform. Right now I'm slightly leaning towards PS3 exclusive but only slightly - it might just be multiplatform (which I would not like very much).

There's a new quote from a different Konami PR person (named Chiaki Nakajima) that doesn't even refer to the Xbox 360, but just about how the company was going multi-plat from now on and hoped to take advantage of each platform. Make of this what you will.

MGS5, confirmed + mutliplat as of 15:40 GMT!

"In a statement from Kojima Productions earlier, they accounced that the countdown would lead to the fifth installment of Metal Gear. The game would use MGS4 architecture, but it would simultaneously be developed for both PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. Kojima expressed his hesitation regarding the use of the MGS4 engine on the Xbox 360, but is confident his team will do a good job."

Solid Snake, these were + (positive) and - (negative) points to multiplat :p

errrrr yeah I did forget to answer the question of the thread :p (oops)

So, in my opinion, and after the list I made:

I think Konami would benefit from a multiplat release, MSG had never appeard to me as a system seller before this gen, but because of this new status, I believe the exposure of the series has increased.
Sure it's a niche game, but it's still by far the 3rd best selling PS3 game, so it can't be that niche... and the price of the PS3 will have on it's own prevented many gamers from going PS3 over 360 while ensuring they don't get both consoles (i'm an example these people exist), so I would not exclude the 360 base increase as nonexistent.
In 2 words, Big value for Konami.

For Sony, the deal pretty clear. Their own exclusives have failed to move significant amounts of consoles, and this franchise apparently does. It's also their highest rated exclusive, and one for which there has been much advertizement and much buzz. Retaining exclusivity by moneyhatting would be the smart move on the sony part...
That is, if they intend to remain in the console gaming business. Their PSP is hacked as hell but the PS3 is unhacked... so their next move could be to do a portable "unhackable" console so to take advantage of the market created by the PSP (the competition of the DS is there... but as they are only 2 very different platforms I doubt they eat much of each other's market share rather than creating some).
In this latter scenario, the exclusivity of a MSG5 will not make Sony benefit anything and would likely be an expensive endeavor (I would guess this game could sell and extra 1.5M over 4 if multiplat so count in a good 20M to foork out either in cash or by handling the marketing costs etc...), it is therefore very possible that the Sony Gaming division decides to let Konami decide on it's own with nothing more than nice words to try to sway them to the exclusivity.
However as it is unlikely (but surely not impossible given Sony's financial situation) that Sony drops out of the console race for next gen, I think they'll try to keep MSG5.

Anyother important thing to remember is that PS3 price is definitely going to be lowered in this yr.. so a new MGS game can again become system seller for PS3 due to more exposure.. and PS3 at a lower price point can attract new buyers
