Considering how the Wii sells games, The Conduit has a great chance of selling millions over long term.
But instant gratifcation counts, and unless it sells a certain number. even if it's a smash hit over the next few months, they will raise up their shouts that it's a flop, and all the implications they want it to have.
I mean, they still post stories of Chinatown Wars having apparently poor sales (based on US alone, not worldwide), based solely on the notion that GTA + attach rate should be able to overcome an experimental + throwback game that would turn off the mainstream crowd that embraced the 3D games. And it certainly hasn't slowed down core developer support.
So The Conduit will likely have the same thing, no matter how much it sells in the long term, if it sells below a certain amount.
Anything less than 100k in the opening week guarantees it. 200k-300k would make it harder for such cries to be credible. 500k or more would likely silence all but the most delusional fanboys and trolls.
Again, the actual opening week won't matter. Remember Boom Blox and CoD: WaW. Even CTYD it selling better than its opening weeks indicated (although only slightly better, and may top out at just over 200k). What matters here is if the bashers will have an excuse or not.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
