Forums - Sales - Is the Wii bubble About to Burst?

*Salutes Rock_on_2008 for admitting which company is loved without dancing around it*

I've been a Ninty fan since the NES. I stood up for it during the N64 and GC eras, and made dumb excuses. And I always loved those systems despite the hardships they had. We don't see eye-to-eye during these years, but I respect your attitude.

Also, see 1) the Gamecube and 2) Xbox 360 in Europe for why cheaper consoles don't win. Heck, in the US, the Wii is still above the market-accepted $200 mark and it still sells like crazy.

Also, yeah this is one of the few sites where necroposting is awesome.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

For the sake of gaming we all hope the Wii's bubble will burst as soon as the PS3's price falls closer to the Wii in price. it will be game on. The tide could turn and the PS3 may even come back and win this generation.

Why? Does the Wii bother you? Does it offend you? Does the Wii wither away at your HD ego?

Can you give me one valid explanation supported by logic and reason why bursting the Wii bubble is a benefit to the gaming industry?

Wii has the price advantage over the PS3. If PS3 and Wii were at same price of $250US PS3 would easily beat the Wii in console numbers. Wii at $250US compared to the PS3 $400-$500US. It is a huge advantage to the Wii.

People keep on bnaging on about price difference and how PS3 would outsell Wii if they had the same price.  At the release of both consoles that would probably have been the case and might even still be the case now even despite the momentum Wii has.  But it's a silly arguement bordering on being retarded.  If PS3 had launched at $250 it would be a completely different console from what you refer to as your beloved PS3.  Cell, blu-ray, 1080p HD they would all be missing.  It would almost just be a Wii without the silly name and innovative controls.  In any event Wii will always have price advantage.  By the time PS3 can reduce to $250 Wii could probably reduce to $99.  Who would sell more then?  Sony decided they needed to trojan horse and now they are suffering the consequences in the console war.

The problem of reducing the price to $250 is that Sony will suffer heavier losses per console sold. I don't know whether having a starting price of $600 is still selling at a loss, but if it is, then the shareholders will definitely not agree.

Let's say the PS3 does drop down. Some PS3 demand is gained at the Wii's expense. But if the Wii counters with its own price drop, the demand curves for both consoles would be back to normal.

That is why the Gamecube won right? Because it was $100 dollars cheaper than the ps2?/sarcasm

No WE don't ALL hope the Wii bubble will burst. Speak for yourself. And speaking of bursting bubbles, I'm going to have to burst your price theory bubble. If you went to Gamestop, a major source, today to buy a console here are your choices:

Gamestop

Wii                    $399.99 NEW (with required bundle)     Used: Not Available
Xbox 360         $349.99 NEW                                       Used: $199.99
PS3                  $399.99 NEW                                       Used: $349.99

Or Amazon.com

Wii                    $340.50 NEW (with required bundle)     Used: $309.50
Xbox 360         $349.99 NEW                                       Used: $265.95
PS3                  $399.99 NEW                                       Used: $330.99

Price is really no longer an issue; the systems are essentially selling at parity at many outlets and guess which one still is in the most demand? All those that kept insisting that all that made the Wii successful is price are going to have to come up with a new argument.

^I'm amazed by that pricing. You mean the Wii's selling like mad DESPITE retailers artificially jacking up the price?

Apparently

PS3's going to start selling like hotcakes when the price is the same. Look how it's catching up to the Wii right now as the prices get closer. Will people stop talking about how the PS3 is going to start dominating? It makes you look like you don't have any sense. I never said that the Gamecube was going to start dominating because I am a Nintendo fan. It's a good thing to be a fan and support whoever you are into through the thick and the thin. I'm a Chicago Cubs fan and can definitely understand that. The thing is I don't say that they are going to win the World Series every year. The Wii has already won this generation. They are selling more systems than PS and MS put together. Isn't that proof enough?

Why hasn't the bubble burst?

I believe its due to games like Wii Fit.

As for those "Game X will turn things around" statements, I couldn't disagree more. One must not underestimate the power of public perception. When one console becomes the "chosen one" in the eyes of the general public, any competitors to that console stands a great risk of being seen as "uncool". The longer the time passes, the deeper this perception sinks in, brainwashing the masses.

The PS3 does have a number of excellent games out in 2009. But it's likely that the public will be too engrained into the Wii to care too much about them by then.

It was the same for the GC last gen. Forum users back then stated how "Resident Evil 4" is going to turn things around, blah blah. But obviously it didn't. It was too little too late.
