Forums - Sony - Sony Hints It May Cut Prices on PS3 Game System

I don't doubt there will be a slim, but I don't think it will be accompanied by a price cut. Sony simply can't afford it, and the model refresh will generate at least a little extra demand from existing PS3 owners looking to trade up to what they'd see as the "latest-and-greatest."

I believe that this is the tactic Sony will try to take to boost sales. They can't cut the price -if they could afford it they'd have done it long ago- so they have to look to other demand-spiking tricks. I don't think this will work, but I think they will try it.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Yeah, we all know they are going to cut the price, and there was no way that they could continue through the holiday without doing so, but the question comes in the form of will it be a PS3 Slim for $300 at E3, or will we have to wait until September for a $300 "fat" PS3

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't expect a price-cut this year.
I'm expecting more & better games, more PS3 / PSN features, improving PSN, smarter marketing etc ... but not a pricecut.

Yeah Sony really seems intent on forgetting its profitability goal for the sake of increasing market share a little. They even admitted in their last financial report that this year they'll have more losses on gaming.

In another thread I calculated with optimistic assumptions that a $100 price cut will cost Sony at least $380 million this fiscal year. So good luck convincing shareholders of SCE's sustainability.

@ NJ5, aren't they hoping PSP sales, which I assume will produce profit, and increased software sales will help offset that. Now we are into 2nd or even 4th games for Sony developers, the costs are going to be lower, with the massive cost of Killzone 2 gone (it cost them nearly as much to make 3) that should help somewhat, but they are still likely to make a loss
