This is the universal truth of PS3 fanboys when talking relative 360/PS3 price:

If the overall sales are higher, its because the Xbox 360 is cheaper than the PS3 as the major reason for the difference.

If someone asks whether to get a PS3 or Xbox 360, they are told to get the PS3 because the Xbox 360 costs more over time as the major reason or about Blu Ray which is worth $$$.

Im not trying to be mean, but im getting sick of the contradiction.

All that matters to the consumers when they buy a product is the entry price. The hidden fees aren't usually obvious to them. I know it wasn't to me when i bought my wii.

ASP for the Xbox 360: $290 according to pachter

Cheapest Blu Ray player: $250 @ Bestbuy

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9244908&st=blu+ray+player&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1218066284569

This is one difference which is obvious to consumers, heck even the difference between the Arcade + Blu Ray is $50 in favour of the PS3 and demand for Blu Ray has been increasing.

So are you suggesting that people buy a blu ray player instead of a video games console :p regardless of what they can do, people won't pay 400 dollars if they just wanna watch blu ray if they don't have to.

Again consumers don't see all of those advantages..

A 360. Is almost at the price of a ps2.. compaired to a ps3 which is 3 times that of a ps2. That's what the consumer sees.

If people didn't value the Blu Ray then quite likely the PS3 wouldn't be selling as close. So of course it adds to the value of the console. Also people who are interested in Blu Ray are people who own an HDTV or are looking to own an HDTV and a recent consumer survey I saw had over 60% of people at least interested in the feature.

The PS2 is 1/3rd the cost of the average sale price of the Xbox 360, so it does have the significant cost advantage, Xbox 360 to PS3 not so much.

lol maybe in america. Last time i saw a xbox 360 here it was priced 1300 kr while a ps2 goes for 1000-1200 kr. So Here it's certainly not that big of a difference. Also i think you're confusing the xbox 360 with the elite model which microsoft almost scrapped due to selling so low numbers of it :p

And just because they're interested in blu ray doesn't mean they're willing to spend that kind of money. 360 is at the price range of impluse purchases. Heck i've seen them selling xbox 360s at the super market.. (as a week only thing)

Europe hates the Xbox 360... its only natural that Microsoft does terribly there. Also the features of the PS3 suit Europeans better than Americans. I mean smaller houses, mean quieter/all in one units are better suited. They also have wide wireless adoption and they love the brand. I mean there are people over there that wouldn't buy the 360 even if it was 1/4 of the price of the PS3.

Microsoft needs to come out with a new shaped Xbox 360 slim to take peoples minds of reliability issues and add wireless because Europeans actually like that stuff.

I live in New Zealand and yet I know what the consoles are priced in Europe and America but I couldn't quote you the prices in my own country!

I think it's far too complex to say Sony messed up with the PS3, it depends on the primary goals Sony has for the short and long term

...
What seems to have been Sony's main goals:

- Provide a console which can stand the test of time like no other Sony console before it from a technical perspective regarding gaming.
- Provide a console which interests people more with regard to adopting HDTVs, surround systems and Blu-Ray movies.

...

The PS3 is most geared at the mature male gamers, the 360 at teen males and the Wii at kids and females. One could be of the opinion that this is a great situation as all major gamer groups are being served by appealing console solutions.

Lets cut through some of your typical BS.

Sony did not come out with the PS3 advertising it (or even mentioning it) as the "console to serve your multimedia and gaming needs for the next decade".  That kind of longevity talk came WAAAYYY later because they are trying to save face.  CLEARLY they did not expect for the console to do so poorly for so long.  Ironically, if they had actually felt that way (that it was going to be the new standard for a decade or something approaching that amount of time) and advertised it that way sales may have been better, because then maybe people would have seen the $400 as more of a good long-term investment.

The Xbox 360 is not "most geared" at teen males.  I'm almost 38.  Which is the better platform for Fallout3?  Xbox, because it has the full content available.  Which is better for Mass Effect?  Easy, its not made for PS3.  Xbox 360 is as much geared towards adult males as it is to teen males. I'm not sure a guy (you) who lists Singstar Vol. 2 in his collection can be taken as an expert on *typical* adult male gamer preferences.

Currently playing:  PC:  Wolfenstein  PS2:  Final Fantasy X  PS3: All-Pro Football 2K8 Wii:  Force Unleashed  PSP:  God of War: CoO Xbox 360:  Gears of War 2

Most anticipated game:  Dragon Age Origins (PC)

Looking at the prices at entry levels, its a good thing.

Actually pretty good given its price.

In no other market does a product sale so close to something half its price. A +30k 3series BMW is the biggest success selling 100k while a camry +20k sales 400k.

Except, BMW makes a very high margin on those cars and Toyota makes money on the Camry as well, albeit at a much higher volume.
