Erik, I think you're writing on the same page I am and not realizing it.

I do believe I said marketing, design, appeal, etc...are what has attributed to the success. Even a Blue Ocean strategy alone won't work if you don't meld these aspects into it as well. The new market must be tapped correctly which is why I called it the casual market because so far no console had tapped that market correctly. The casual market was still blue until Nintendo came along.

I'm really not sure how you can say Metroid Prime 3 was designed to appeal a greater audience than ever before given that it's still targeted for the fans/core audience. While it may have more appeal to former non-gamers/disenfranchise gamers simply because of the consoles they are on, the game isn't as approachable as say Nintendogs or Wii Sports.

Some very valid points that i take on board.

People are too quick to dismiss Sony in my opinion. Call me naive, but i don't think the race is over by any means regardless of the head start. You can throw the history books out of the window for this generation in my opinion.

Despite Nintendo's lead, i believe the games industry NEEDS Sony to make the Playstation 3 a success to strengthen the heritage and image of this relatively young industry. After all, the majority of people that think of the word "videogame" automatically think of PLAYSTATION first. Sony cannot afford to mess up this brand, as it will have massive repercussions on the games industry.

But good luck to all 3 to be honest and it's great to see Nintendo back on top thanks to their creative genius and marketing prowess.

mr. wibbly go back 10 years ago and when people heard the word videogame they automatically thought nintendo first, and they had been thinking that way for 10 years. when sony took over from nintendo it didn't cause serious problems for the industry. it won't have massive repercussions on the games industry at all, its just the switching of the crown from sony back to nintendo. games will go on being games there just happens to be a new leader and its nintendo again.

 lol @ that... i still say i'm going to go play nintendo.... even if i'm going to play playstation. this "majority of people" are a bit too young if you ask me...

 I don't know why you think we should through out the history books.  Are we not supposed to learn from the past?  And I don't know about most people thinking PLAYSTATION first when you say videogames.  Among my friends and family, they still refer to any game system as a NINTENDO.  But, I bet it's more even between the two when it comes to the general population.

 Are you able to explain what massive repercussions you think the game industry would suffer if PS3 messed up this generation?

 What does FUD stand for? I understand the general meaning of it from reading the forums, but what does it stand for?  I think I know the F    8)

Nintendo has vastly increased the userbase via Blue Ocean strategies. People who wouldn't look at a Playstation consider the Wii and DS to be the first real game console out there.

If you tell them the PS3 is the "real" console and that's how games should work, they'll doubt you and keep playing the Wii or DS. That era of gaming makes no sense to them.

I doubt there will be some great backlash if Sony doesn't dominate by the end of the console cycle.
