Forums - Sony - 3 years PS3 - no innovation, just Shooters?

Laffer said:

What happened? After 3 years we have the best available FPS on a console with Killzone2, but where is the innovation? Does Sony only try to beat XBOX360 in Shooter Quality?

The PS3 Eye is almost unused! I could imagine incedible cool games, bringing the Eyetoy stuff from PS2 to a next level? Two PS3 Eye as combo could capture 3 dimensional movements. Imaginate Wii Boxing style Game with full 3D Capture of the movements of the player! Street Fighter with full body capture....

Where are the new ideas? The Games are always so linear, you can follow only ONE clear path in the Game worlds, no free terrain to move whereever you want...CoD WaW are examples... I want a map where I can choose my own path...

Where is a Super "ELITE" Space Simulation Game (you remember from Commodore 64) which you play online... or the XWING vs TIE-FIGHTER Star Wars Games where we can play online together and attack Star Destroyers, or defend them?

Somebody remembers Broderbonds "The Castles of Dr. Creep" on the C64? This could be an incredible cool online game, like LBP today.

But what do we get? FPS, FPS and maybe a 3PS...

While I partly agree with your point, this is true for all the consoles. I fail to see the reason why you singled out Sony.

It's more fun to point fingers at Sony.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Maybe, but if you look at his game collection, it's pretty clear why he's more concerned with Sony than with Nintendo or MS.

burnout paradise was fun with the eye....mugshots are awesome...now if they would do that more with fps...that would be funny....take a pic of you everytime someone kills you...they'd give you the finger...

It hasn't got ONLY shooters but yes it lacks very much in some genres... Platformer, Action Adventure and RPGs... I have trouble thinking of any PS3 games I'd want to play.

I have no issues with the console itself... It's really just the library. =/

Not denying he's a ps3 owner, just saying it's more fun to point fingers at Sony. By default I own more Sony games than MS and Ninty but I still point fingers at Sony.

The PS3 Eye is almost unused! with good reason I could imagine incedible cool games, bringing the Eyetoy stuff from PS2 to a next level? Sorry to break it to you...the Eyetoy games sucked. Two PS3 Eye as combo could capture 3 dimensional movements. Yes, they could. And? Imaginate Wii Boxing style Game with full 3D Capture of the movements of the player Sounds awful.! Street Fighter with full body capture.... I can't hadouken in real life.

Where are the new ideas? everywhere- LBP, Flower, Noby Noby Boy, hell, Trash Panic...The Games are always so linear All of them?, you can follow only ONE clear path in the Game worlds Really?, no free terrain to move whereever you want are we playing the same console?...CoD WaW are examples that's a multiplat, and CoD's always been like that.... Uncharted. Care to name some more?

There, I overanalysed your post and hence destroyed it.

You want innovation, get a Wii.

I'm with you on RPGs, but Action Adventure and Platformer are the PS3's two strongest genres...

-Ratchet and Clank games (two, with another releasing this year)

-LBP

-Prince of Persia

-Uncharted

-Bionic Commando Rearmed

And quite a few more. Action Adventure...WOW:

-MGS4

-Uncharted

-BioShock (it may be first person, but it's still Action Adventure)

-inFamous

-GTA4

-Ninja Gaiden Sigma

-Resident Evil 5

-Devil May Cry 4

-Heavenly Sword

-Saint's Row 2

-Assassin's Creed

-The Darkness

And those are just 80+ on Metacritic...I don't own nearly all of those.

@ OP

I, like you, really enjoy innovative game designs. And the PS3 does have some. To find them you will have to go to PSN (Pixel Junk series, Fat Princess, Flower, Pain, etc.)

Unfortunately, since sony has decided to make development costs very high on retail releases, you will not see much innovation there. The developers play it very safely and create tried and true designs and use/reuse franchises often. But there are some exceptions like LBP and Valkarie Chronicles (but i do expect LBP to milked too).

Coming up with innovative games it almost as hard as exploring a new area of earth... people have tried just about everything new and so now mostly all that's left is mixes of all these.
Being innovative is good, but most of the times the reason why something hasn't been done before, is because it's a bad idea
