Even though Riddick is a counterexample, isn't it mostly less risky to develop a game for both consoles?
I want to know about overall trends, not a single game.

Lets look at Riddick... It sold 150K on 360 and 70K on ps3 thus far. If atari announced this was a 360 exclusive, the 360 sales would most likely be around 200K now...considering the people that wanted to play the game and own both consoles but bought the ps3 version instead. Also, having a game be exclusive usually gets some free MS marketing on Live...so more sales Also there would be no cost associated to porting this to ps3. Now you can't say that wouldn't be financially advisable for Atari. |
Not sure I understand the logic there...
You're saying that of the 70k PS3 owners that bought Riddick, 50k are multiconsole owners ????
More than doubtfull. try 5k instead....
Making a title like Riddick or FEAR 2 exclusive isn't going to boost its sales much...
Those games aren't much better than Too Human and we all saw how well the fact of being exclusive helped that games move a tonn of units...

Err...no. Too human was pretty good but FEAR 2 and Riddick are a step above for sure. Riddick especially is phenomenal if you never played the first one.
Also while we are all dealing with estimations, I believe that free MS live advertising and single platform would be about 50K more sales for a title like Riddick which is known to have xbox roots. I'm sure a lot of xbox people have it on their radar but havent bothered to pick it up and it seems just like another multiplat game...

I have a strange feeling that MS may not be getting as much return on investment as they would have liked and might be changing direction for the latter half of this year. This. Everyone wondered why Sony wasn't spending money on their own DLC. Well they were spending money not on DLC but games.
And the age of the third party exclusive is over. I'll be quite a moneyhat to of set 4-5 million sales you won't get by cockblocking on one of the HD twins.

Thats Sandbox, RPG, RPG, RTS, RPG...
I am asking about action and shotters...
Also, this thread is not about MS buying games, but 3rd parties concluding that it would be benefisial to develop a game or 2 for the 360 exclusively to fill the void of exclusive titles in first half of 2009.

But it does. Think about it, had GTA IV been a PS3 exclusive from the get go, would it have sold better AND lots of PS3s? I would think so. When you believe there's only going to be one version, you're more inclined to pick it up. Why do you think Halo Wars and Gears 2 aren't on PC? Maximizing sales!!! Microsoft knows what they're doing, which is why I can see where disolitude is coming from. |
We're talking about third parties here, moving hardware is not their problem. And an exclusive GTA IV would have sold millions of copies less than the multiplatform version. So how would that help Take Two?
No, you're not more inclined to pick up a game when it is only on 1 platform. The only difference is that if you want to buy the game you only have 1 available platform to choose from. And Microsoft is not third party, so of course they want to move their hardware.
