Forums - Sales - Too many first/second party PS3 titles for holiday season a bad idea?

So no new shooter for the holiday? MAG probably would benefit most from the holidays, even with MF2 in the vicinity. Place it well before MF2 so it can get some sales, and then get some added sales from the holiday season.

Place it in June and everyone will forget about the title by the time it gets to the holidays, ruining whatever (low) sales it is going to get anyway from being released in June.

The titles that should move towards a summer release are big blockbusters, because it is know (and proven) that they can withstand a slow season (GTA IV, RE 5). Don't place something like MAG in a blind season :-/

@ RPG: not every country allows renting. It is forbidden over here, so buying is the only option.

And people wanting MF2 will probably play that game to death, meaning that MAG in the summer would not interest them anyway, as Activision Blizzard is smart enough to keep DLC's coming that sell shitloads anyway. That would probably take away attention from any other shooter game at that point too.

MAG should be placed a month (or two) before MF2 as there are no other shooters (to my knowledge) coming out in the coming months and people might want a "let's do something else while we wait for MF2"-game. Shooter fans will then automatically look for another shooter. Add in increases sales from the holidays anyway, and mag will benefit quite a bit from a holiday-close release.

One thing is for sure, if GT5 is ready it MUST release during holiday 09. For one it would not allow Forza 3 to get away and secondly it is simply a huge franchise which will ease to 2 million first week.

Well, GT 5 is such a large franchise, that it would also make sense to place it in the summer to create a huuuuuuge spike in hardware and software for Sony. It's one of those titles that don't really care any special period to sell.

don't forget WKC and possibly Demon's Souls

err no that would just be stupid. Release Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted 2 and GT5 this holiday season. Then GOW III for March 2010, Heavy Rain and MAG for June 2010 when the MF2 fatigue hits and that about take's care of what has been announced. New big exclusives revealed such as the obvious Resistance 3 and others for holiday 2010.

@papflasje you also have to think about all the 3rd party games releasing. I for one if having to choose would choose MF2 over MAG and any other first party title besides GT5. The number of 3rd party games during the holiday season will be big and many will choose them over first/second party titles.

Which begs the question......why do you lot not rent? I will play all these games and more yet save so much monies.

I'm with you on the first four.

Heavy Rain isn't going to sell well, anyway. It's a niche game, and it could do with a holiday boost. . The majority of gamers would strongly dislike Heavy Rain. Releasing it along with some other games isn't going to do anything; the holiday season is when people are in the mood to buy most. And Heavy Rain is unlike any PS3 game currently out; it's like saying Crack in Time will threaten FIFA 10's sales. Delaying it would hurt interest, cost money as the team is idle, and hurt sales.

MAG in June 2010...hmm. I think this is another title which needs holiday rush. It's not the kind of game people massively anticipate, it's the kind of game you'd see in a store and think "hmm, cool" and possibly end up purchasing it.

Nobody really cares about Resistance anymore. The first game was good, and people were hoping for a huge improvement in the sequel, but there wasn't one. Whether it's better or worse than Fall of Man is debatable. But it's not the AAA FPS a lot of people (like myself) were expecting it to be. Not that I dislike it, it's a solid 8/10, but a Resistance game isn't worth holding your breath for.

mid-2010 would see EyePet (lolz), God of War III, Quantum Theory, Under Siege (maybe), FF13, , LA Noire, and a bunch of multiplats and unannounced games.

The holiday season would have Resistance 3, MotorStorm 3, FF Versus XIII, the next Jak game, and Syphon Filter, I would think. And Team ICO's project which will blow away every PS3 game except God of War III released that year and perhaps ever!

How the fuck did I forget that? I even have a Team ICO game in my avatar!

*thinks of excuse*

It doesn't officially exist yet because there hasn't been an official announcement! Furthermore, we don't know when it will release!

EDIT: What are you talking about? Look at my post, it's right there, and even in bold!
