Forums - Sales - Japanese DS owners fed up with Square-Enix spin-offs and remakes?

I'm buying FFIV, but DQS is indeed a bad game.

I don't think Square has anything to worry about with the Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest series. They may have expected more sales for Reverent Wings or Rings of Fate, but those games combined cost a fractions of what FFXII did to make and I guarantee they're making a nice profit on both games. Now I kind of do think they're making too many remakes and spin-offs of both series, but hell it seems to be working out well for them.

FF TA2, DQIV, and FFIV are going to be interesting. If we see continued decline than maybe there is something to this post. I doubt we will though. I expect all three to sell in the 500k to a million range.

That's what I mean.

The thing is, games like Final Fantasy really should be something special; they should not use this name for so much games IMO, and if they have bad luck, they'll really hurt the reputation of the series and see lower sales numbers for the main series too.

Of course you can argue that Nintendo is doing the same with Mario, but the difference is that the Mario games that come out all the time are in completely different genres than the original games, so a Mario platformer is still something special.

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

I guess I am the only person looking forward to DQS...

I keep hearing it is a bad game, but all the complaints I hear are that it doesn't feel like DQ.

It plays well, from the impressions I have read.

The logical assumption inherent in the original post is that all spinoffs are created equal (which is why we assume that all spinoffs should see relatively similar sales).

This isn't true. Not only do spinoffs vary wildly in quality, but more importantly, they vary wildly in how closely or distantly they relate to the core stories of the franchise: Crisis Core for the PSP, for example, is intimiately tied to the FF VII universe, while Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles isn't even pretending to be related to the same story line, and is only a Final Fantasy game because it happens to have the Final Fantasy name on it.

All of the sales figures listed are fine, in my opinion, when we recognize this.

No, no, no it is:  "(...)that all men are created equal."

We need some "Bill of Spinnoff rights" or something to make sure they are quality games

I'm looking forward to it also, killing me some slime!  DQ IX is gonna be sweet though

Hi, this is Vince with Shamwow.

The only game that I'll buy form S-E on Wii is FFCC:CB... I think it looks awesome, focused more on storyline and single player.

No way I'll get DQS and well main Dragon Quest being on DS is okay... I'm not a fan of those though, cause I never played them.
