Forums - Sony - Infamous dev praise CELL processor like a gun was pointed at their heads

While it does seem like a trolling post...if you actually watch the video it really is pretty bad. Every second sentence is "the cell is amazing" or "we only could have done it on ps3" type stuff.

As these guys create games exclusive to sony platforms, all theyre actually comparing the ps3 to when they say this stuff is the ps2...

They've never even made a 360 game, so to say this is only possible on the ps3 seems a bit bullshit to me.

Were we watching the same video, or did you stop watching it?  They only did that for about a minute or so, then it was just pure InFamous kickassness.  This game looks like it will consume so much of my life..ahh!

Hahaha omg.  Yeah i only watched the first half.   I just assumed the rest of the video continued like that. Sorry my bad.

Just watched the vid. They did cite the PS3 a few too many times (I bet this video goes on the PS3 store VERY soon), but for the most part, it just got me hyped to play inFamous! A month or two ago, I thought inFamous looked pretty bad. Now, it's a must own, in my opinion. Some of the NPC annimations were awkward, but that's just nit picking. Awesome video!!

I didn't really notice much about "just on the cell", but more an emphasis on not feeling burdened by having limitations. In both storage or having to worry about number of animations going on. One of the big success of the PS1 was have extra space with less constriction. Though the battle of space doesn't seem to matter as of the PS2 era.

I really love sandbox worlds, especially with the ability to climb any and jump just about anywhere. It's why I liked AC. While I'll be missing out on this game for a few years I like the looks.

Saying that there was absolutely nothing in the game play engine itself that couldn't be done on a Dream Cast. Keep in mind that game play engine is different from graphical engine.

@Grass issue
Rendering game grass and light grass are very different. The game grass likely are a series of billboards, with the grass not having to deal with light and shadow on each blade to blade, just large object to blades. In 3d studios the rendering engine is built to give real time lighting. So what was likely killing the rending was that it was a polygon structure than say a billboard and it was rendering light and shadow off each blade of grass to the other.

I also wonder if the game grass in question is really an individual blade of grass or was a group of grass billboards. The difference is that an update to a root would also apply to the grass below the root. Randomly placing a few hundred of these around an area with numerous groups say 100 groups(data structure) of 100 blades would be far easier while still emulating the beauty of wind swept knee high grass. The over head of each individual object in 3d space of 200,000 objects while maintaining the rest of the game objects would kill memory on a console most systems. Which makes me think of a group like structure was used. It's not that I don't think a strong CPU couldn't handle individual objects, but I do believe that memory overhead would be more of a concern.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Every blade of grass is independently processed. Have you played flower? There are thousands upon thousands blades of grass that sway to the winds' tune, the players' tune and also change colour.
I have no expertise in computing, but it does seem a very taxing task.

And is there a problem with a developer praising something that allowed them to create a game they love?

The problam is not the developers praising Cell and the PS3. The problam is the pathetic, jealious fanboys!

Playing and finishing games first>>>>>>>>>>Then talking!

Opinions are subjective and just like moods, can change.

TOP 12: Deus Ex, Shadow Man, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturn, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Metroid Prime, Zelda (series), Uncharted (series), FF Tactics, Persona (series), Demons Souls, Vagrant Story.

MOST WANTED: Deus Ex: Human Revolution, The Last Guardian, ICO/Shadow OTC HD

How many times do devs have to prove, that when coded right Cell is still one of the most powerful proccessors out?

Just looking at the effects it made possible in Killzone 2, Flower, and Motorstorm 2 should have been enough. With the future games like Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, and MAG pushing the point even further, I think it is time the PS3 haters step aside, and realize Cell, just like Blu-ray, is a huge reason why PS3 games > 360 games (from a tech standpoint). No one is saying 360 games are not awsome, they are. People with all three platforms, PS3 fanboys, and anyone with common sense is just saying, that technically PS3 is a more powerful console thanks to Cell, and Blu-ray.

Another point I want to push is the fact that PS3 being a lead platform on 3rd party games is a great thing for 360 only owners. Because PS3 has the power to do so much more, and the space to utalize so much more, it allows the devs to do that much more. If PS3 did not have Cell pushing the boundries, devs would not put the effort in to get what they do out of the 360. If Blu-ray had been left out devs would have never thought about 50 - 100GB games, but now 360 fans can look forward to them thanks to Sony giving devs the room to display their vision.

No the problem is something being praised thats completely outdated.  the cell omg the cell .. who cares. Its all a marketing gimik.  A modern day i7 cpu blows it out of the water.  The new graphics cards comming out are pushing 2 teraflops.  Its like praising the pentium 4

The Cell was designed for super coputers. It's definetly not like pentium 4 or the xenon

It also has more cores then the I7 :p

AND when it devours android 17 and 18 it'll be complete. We'll see the ps4 when that happens.

Check out my game about moles ^

Gameplay >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything you ever think of in a game.

Teh cell can haz time travelz though

POWAH TO TEH CELL!

The OP did misrepresent the video a bit, the didn't really fawn over the CELL nearly as much as he suggested. The guys talked about the Cell a bit but the way it plays out is a combination of the questions they were asked, the answers they gave and then the way the video was edited.

The game looks pretty cool too.
