@Legend11: But really, this looks like a gimmick. On the Wii you can always resort to buttons for things which motion controls don't do well. Using the "distance between hands" to control a totally unrelated aspect is retarded.

Entirely true, as the distance between hands theory shows that the motion controls do not know of any objects between both hands, such as a sword, unless there was a motion-sensing baton being used as well. That adds more money and another item for this theory.

Pretty soon we'll need to buy real swords, and then real goblins to hack up over and over.

Well you've sold me on the idea. What's a good goblin go for now a days?

I really doubt Sony or MS will be able to produce a "true" Wii killer (whatever it is packaged with the console or not)

I mean the PS3 is too expensive for the family market (even 300$ will remain a bit too high) and even if the Xbox360 si cheap (arcade) it just doesn't have the appeal that Wii has ...

But if they succeed, yes, it will be a lot of cash for MS
Just look how they killed the ipod with their zune !!!!!!!!

... oh, wait, they did not ;)))

LESSON : It is very very very very hard to disturb a market after a recent disturbtion !

I think the real lesson is that its difficult to beat an incumbant by producing the same console (PS2 generation), but its possible to be successful by targeting a different strategy and that can lead to a home run (Wii).

Tease.

Lag will be a huge problem with this, at least if it is done now on today's technology.

The amount of processing you have to do to detect, analyse, interpret motions before even getting them into the game will make it useless for anything that requires reactions. Like sports.

Won't happen. Or if it does, it won't happen well.

That's why having motion control as default controler is dumb. It should be only kept optional to games that really benefit from it.

Making it standard is the only way to not have it fall by the wayside. Just look at the Balance Board, how many games are taking advantage of it? Not many, and the installed base is huge for a peripheral. It benefits from the fact Wii Fit is so novel but after that....even though it's successful people don't want to use it because it's not standard. This is why I think Motion + will eventually be made standard/semi-standard, unlike the Balance Board.

Lol @ thread. :p

I remember people laughing at the Wii...

I remember people loving it too...

People tend to overestimate these technology companies, particularly when it comes to Nintendo. I'm not saying this won't work, but aren't you giving it to them a little early? It's unbelievable, that after two years people aren't willing to give Nintendo any credit whatsoever, they've been working with motion controls for a long time, this is new in MS's hands(no pun intended).

This is the fallacy. The Wii didn't success *just* because of motion controls - the Wii succeed because of the entire package, and its integration: motion control, screen pointing, one-handed remote, WiiSports, small unit, cheaper launch price, VC, Zelda, smart marketing, ...

MS are *much* better off designing their next console to use motion control from the very start (and maybe also being 360 backwards-compat) - rather than releasing a motion control range for the 360 now.

...

If the E3 announcement is a *new console*, which may/not be 360 compat - then its a different story.

All motion control now on the 360 will do, is force Sony to do something similar - and maybe accelerate the release of the Wii HD. And damage MS's potential for their next console (unless its a LONG way off).

The Atlanta Hawks are more likely to win the NBA title this year.

There have been rumors that they were going to announce new motion controls at EVERY major confrence. Same with sony.

Even if it did come out... the die has been cast with these things.  Full motion technology is still fairly expensive and rigged with all sorts of challenges.

Also it would have to deal with not being standard...

I looked back in the post and couldn't find it, but someone was basically saying people don't want to hold their arms up because it would get very tiring. That was my issue with the Wii! With a lot of games you have to continually point your arm right at the TV and it gets old fast. Look at regular controller posture, your arms are relaxed and its comfortable to play for extended periods. Also like it was said people want to sit on their couch or lay in bed and play most games. When I was playing Twilight Princess I just ended up laying in bed with the controller propped up to roughly aim at the screen and the whole thing felt awkward. I realize that's not the way you are supposed to play Wii.

I could care less about this technology for the 360. That said I do find it funny that the Wii fans who praise motion control are all coming out of the wood work to say "this is stupid and it won't work." That's very hypocritical. Everything can be improved upon. I'm not even saying this gesture tech is an improvement but the point remains, if Nintendo can be successful with this type of thing so can Sony or Microsoft. I personally wish the entire world would wake up from motion controls like it was a bad dream, leave controllers the way they are and focus on improving the games themselves not their interfaces. If we get to a point where you can't just pick up a controller and relax on the couch while you game, I'll quit buying new systems at that point.
