Wii Music did recieve some really bad reviews. Not bad as in low scores, but bad as in people not trying to understand the game, or people that simply disliked that type of game. You do not put a reviewer that hates soccer more than anything to review a soccer game. But you can put a reviewer that hates casual games and absolutely need highscores to enjoy playing on reviewing Wii Music. And that part is not good.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion. And I do not doubt that the reviewers stated their opinion. But you should give any game the same treatment as you do the others. That's all. |
There's a difference. Some reviewers would love football, some would think it's alright, some would hate it. It's a pretty even three way split, although obviously Europeans seem to prefer football, while Americans aren't great fans of "soccer". That's why IGN UK's football game scores are always higher than those of IGN US (IGN US gave Football Manager 2009 a 2.3 (or something like that), IGN UK gave it 9.1). That was a bad review, because that guy hated football, and the majority of gamers don't.
Wii Music is different. Generally, people who work for large reviewers are "hardcore" gamers. They would have no interest in Wii Music. I don't think IGN or GameSpot have a single staff member who would consider Wii Music anything better than mediocre, with a fair number thinking it's complete trash. But the enormous majority of their readers are from this same demographic. So they are just being loyal to their audience.
I hold the opposite opinion to most people. I actually disrespect 1UP for their Wii Music review (in case you don't know, it was an A-, or 90-93%). A- is the same score they gave to MGS4.
MGS4 is widely regarded as one of the best games of this gaming generation, and particularly one of the best on PS3. Its sales reflect that, it is close to 4 million sold. It topped a million first week, and pushed PS3 hardware sales above those of the Wii on its launch week. It was a truly excellent game.
For that masterpiece to receive the same score as (I'm going to be frank here. From what I've seen:) an attempt by Nintendo to make pots of money by releasing a game with very little effort put into it. Now, that's a pretty shallow opinion of the game, I haven't even played it. But in my eyes, and the eyes of the majority of people who would actually read 1UP, GameSpot and IGN, that is true. Whether it is targeted at the "hardcore" or not isn't really relevant. Because IGN and 1UP are.
The only concession I could think of would be to do like Famitsu does, and have a "casual" reviewer. Of course, then they hate excellent games for being too hard (Demon's Souls), and the average goes down. Perhaps only for games targeted at them? What IGN does occasionally, "Another Take", is good. A different reviewer gives a three paragraph summary of what they think of a game. Put a score on the end of that, have a hardcore reviewer write it, and stick it on the end (or the beginning) of the 1UP review, and I would have no problem.
On another note, this game has outsold God of War II, and that makes me a sad panda
