yeah sony made with ibm and toshiba.

but toshiba its the manufacturer now or the main the at least.

and everything in the ps3 is expensive.. i think GPU may be the cheapest part.

it have a gloss black case = expensive.

all come with HDD=  expensive.

1 ppu 3.2ghz +7 3.2ghz spu processor. 9 threads.

XDR 3.2Ghz main ram = VERY expensive.

nvidia RSX = its should be the cheapest to make its should be 45nm by now.

wifi and bluetooth = not expensive but cost extra $$.

and blu ray drive, it diode alone its over 50$

etc.

you have no idea wtf your talking about do you?

HDD expensive? Its a flipping 80GB 2.5" HDD. Its costs less then NewEgg's $35 80GB 2.5" drives because Sony buys in bulk. If the HDD costs Sony $20 per PS3 I'd be shocked.

Cell Processor probably costs about $110 each.

RSX GPU maybe $40?

XDR Ram, if they havent switched to using two sticks of XDR2 ram yet, $40 maybe

Casing isnt expensive but does cost like $20

CPU/GPU heatsink costs like $25

OK so far cost from my guestimate is $255. Now add in the following final pieces of hardware.

Blu-ray drive - $140

Motherboard w/ wifi built in - $30

So the PS3 costs Sony about $425 to make give or take.

So my guess is Sony isnt losing much anymore in terms of PS3 sales. Its still painful to lose the cash but they are close to breaking even. If the RSX or Cell shrinks one more time, Blu-ray drive cost drops again, or they switch to two sticks of XDR2 ram they should be able to break even before the end of the year.

No matter what they will make profit.

HDD it's add cost, for a console = expensive.

the arcade its 200$ mainly because it doesn't have a HDD , or at least they are trying to say when 60gb its 100$ more.

Microsoft is ripping customers off plain and simple.

Well the 360 is actually successful so they get away with charging a little more for accessories. Had the PS3 been success like they were hoping do you think it would be $400 right now?

An HDD isnt an accessory. The original Xbox had a built in HDD standard like the PS3. So pretty much Microsoft took a step back in their system's standardization.

I personally think that PS3 is finally making profit...

The recent amount of games that SONY has announced has made me belive this

Plus, when the new Cell chip is added it will reduce costs a LOT and SONY will be in the Black

The Cell is probably under $100 by now.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. I just don't get why the ps3 is losing money.  From everything i can find it is basically because Blu Ray is so expensive.

Blu Ray has been the market for 3 years now and it has come down in price but why not more.  A standard blu ray player is around 200 but with how fast technology advances why are the blu ray components not much cheaper by now.  How many revisions have we had with processors and hard drive sizes in the last three years now?  How is it that it doesn't cost like 300 or less to make the ps3.  These machines are being made in Asia it's not like they are made here in the us were have minimum and benefits to pay to employees.  Does any know why it is not cheaper to build a video game system.  Blu Ray is great but its not holograms walking in the living room its just bigger storage space for hd content.

Please if anyone knows anything about why it is so expensive let us know.

Blu Ray should've never entered the gaming world. It only existed because Blu Ray shareholders got Sony to use the PS3 system as a booster tool to manipulate its value in the market; The PS3's awaiting fanbase was used to house and boost the Blu Ray product into relevance. That way, if it sold a considerable amount, they could drop the price for the normal stand-alone models outside of the gaming industry. Technically the PS3 was intentionally sabotaged this gen for the survival of a product that people thought was irrelevant, not only because of price, but because it was just another DVD player with more space.

From what I've heard, Blu-ray drives are anywhere between $50-$100 to produce, and constantly falling. This holiday, there will be $99 BD players on the market.

Hmm, that's going to be quite the drop in price in ~6 months time.  I'm assuming these will be small time companies making junk players like the Norcent's and other cheap DVD player makers of the world if that's the case.  Seeing a Blu-Ray player at $199 in Canada is a hot deal.  Check out current pricing:

@carl...

sony will be in the black?? what the PS3 making a light profit alone would put Sony Corp in the black? I doubt that.

Not straight away, plus... the cost of Cell will be cheaper. Will also produce less heat, which means less fans needed. So really im betting it could be a pretty big profit, and could lead to the Slim model very soon.

Anyway, PS2 and PSP(if there are any) profits will help

dejavu....oh wow..i remember hearing the same exact thing during the dvd era...why hasn't it come down in price even more...rofl...i feel like i'm back in 1999...

I would just think with like 40 or so million blu ray players sold ps3 and stand alone it would have been cheaper by now thats all i really want ps3 to exceed and have more exclusives

Well for the 360 a HDD is not a necessity. The $200 machine comes with a 256MB memory card so you can play games with no problem. You only need the hard drive for online related stuff and most people probably don't take their console online.

Sony on the other hand forces wifi and a hard drive on people who may never utilize them. BluRay isn't a necessity either considering most people watch movies using DVDs or a PC. Talking about a step back you should mention PS2 compatibility on the PS3 is a thing of the past.

ps3 is using all new technology which is why it is vey expensive, the blu-ray itself is $200
