Forums - Sales Discussion - Atari's grim future

http://wii.ign.com/articles/820/820855p1.html

for the year, $69.7 million loss on net revenue of $122.3 million.

market cap stands at a tad under $35mln, the threshold for NASDAQ listing requirements.

google tells us that at its peak (split adjusted), the stock traded at $1150 in 1996, compared to today's $2.57.  if you were unlucky enough to buy the stock back then, you've lost 99.8%.

what does atari even make these days!?

the Wii is an epidemic.

I predict they will get bought by either a larger developer or private equity. They actually do have some valuable IP of classic games, but as a business they stink.

I think Atari occasionally makes a poorly put together racing game, the sad fellows.

If you ask me, they'll be bought out by another American company, possibly a large one like 2k.

i thought atari was just a front end for other developers now anyway? the actual company was bankrupt years ago from what i remember.
Hardly surprising really considering the huge failure of the lynx and the jaguar, along with some of their later home computers.
Im sure their biggest success was the atari ST which sold well due to it having onboard midi, great for music producers.

First off, as several have already mentioned, this is not the famous Atari. The current "Atari" is really the French developer Infogames, who purchased the rights to the Atari name about four or five years ago. Just wanted to clear that up - this is not Nolan Bushnell's company or anything like that.

Anyway, it's on the sad side but hardly surprising. If you've followed Infogames for the past few years, their record has basically been a continuous train wreck. Their games constantly come out delayed, or ridden with bugs, or go drastically over budget, etc. They haven't hit on a major seller in quite a while either; the company used to publish the Civ franchise, for example, but sold it to Take-Two in 2004, I believe.

I agree with FishyJoe and Montana that someone will buy them out soon, again for the rights to use the Atari name. Although the name probably doesn't mean nearly as much to today's kids as it did a decade ago.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

this company is in even worse shape than majesco, it seems, with no turnaround on the horizon.

the Wii is an epidemic.

Maybe this is a time when Nintendo should pick up some more people and games for their system.
