Forums - Sales - Why Microsoft entered the Console War

Chris Hu said:
@ MikeB The free trial is to get people addicted too it and at $15 a month WoW is a lot more expensive then X-Box live which can be bought on a regular basis for under the MSRP of $49.99 for 13 month. Also once you buy all the expansion packs the game is a lot more expensive then most console games.

I believe that it is now $39.99 for  a year.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

He's right though, and not everyone has thought about/ knows this stuff. No harm, no foul.

The problem is that he is wrong... it wasn't because of the threat to the home PC it was because Microsoft's goal was to gain control of the living room and Sony's Playstation was a threat to that.

because of the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Thanks for the insight.

And to the 2 above me, no, most people either don't know this or don't want to believe it. Especially 360 fanboys who want to believe that M$ is such a great company that has the best interests of their customers at heart, LOL.

M$ don't give a shit about console gaming or gamers for that matter. So Sony and Nintendo have consoles that to some degree threaten Windows. If M$ was confident in their OS they would simply work hard to make sure it stays ahead of the curve of anything the consoles have.

Healthy competition is good for consumers and it drives companies to innovate and make quality products. Unfortunately M$ will never see it this way and will waste billions of dollars trying to stomp Sony and Nintendo into the ground instead of spending that money making quality products.

At this rate, M$ is losing 5 billion $ per generation. Maybe after a few generations, they will finally back out of console gaming and let Sony and Nintendo do what they do best:)

Sorry but the only company losing 5 BILLION this generation in SONY.

Also, just making quality products is NOT ENOUGH to be successful.

Why did SONY BRIBE Warner Bros with 500 MILLION $$$$ to go blu-ray exclusive instead of just "making a quality product?

Why do you think ALL MAJOR CORPORATIONS pay lobbyists to buy off congressmen.

Welcome to the real world.

It's always a good idea to do a little research before you run your mouth

So to reiterate what I said, MS IS LOSING 5 billion per generation, NOT Sony and here's all the info you need to understand this:

http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=57802

MS lost around 5.5 billion from 2000-2004 with the Xbox

They also lost nearly 4 billion from 2005-2007 with the 360 and in 2008 they finally made a profit of 267 million.

BUT, as you may already know, they posted LOSSES last quarter because of their desperate move to drop the 360 price to $199 and take losses on the hardware again. But who could blame them? I mean at $279 they were being outsold weekly by the $399 PS3(with an inferior game library according to MS), how embarrasing. Maybe they also thought that by dropping the price $50 cheaper than the Wii, they could outsell it too??? LOL.

To this date MS's console division is over 9 billion in the red.

Sony on the other hand don't look to good right now, but they their yearly losses went from 2 billion in 2007 to 1 billion in 2008. Unlike MS, Sony hasn't dropped the price for a while and are most likely at break-even on the hardware sales. This combined with increasing software sales and a very strong game lineup for 2009, it would be almost impossible for the mto not make a profit.

To this date Sony's console division is 2.2 billion in the black.

And did you just completely pull the whole "500 billion bribe" thing outta your ass???

and, uh "welcome to the real world"

^ And Sony has made $7.33 on average over 300M consoles.

Tease.

The goal of PlayStation always was to replace PCs. Kutaragi saw Microsoft as their biggest competition even before they entered the market with the Xbox. The PS3 comes closest to the original vision of Kutaragi, i.e. gaming only being a part of the system and not even necessarily the main draw of the console.

It's questionable how much Sony cares for console gaming and gamers after all their actions this generation. Similar to Microsoft they see console gaming and gamers as gateway to their greater goal: a set-top-box for the living room.

Microsoft doesn't really see Nintendo as a threat, the Wii doesn't aim to be a set-top-box, it's simply a game console for the most part. All the big money of Microsoft goes to blocking Sony, be that creating substitutes for popular PlayStation only games or buying third party exclusivity. The attempts to compete with Nintendo are usually halfassed (even Microsoft's "casual" games seem to copy PS games) and Microsoft didn't even mind to release Viva Pinata on the DS.

The point of my post: Nintendo is the only company out of the three that really cares for console gaming and gamers (yes, I am aware that this may sound insane to some people). The industry would have headed towards selfdestruction if it weren't for the Wii and DS which appeal to a large number of people and have by far the lowest development costs of the current generation systems (Wii vs. PS3/360 and DS vs. PSP). These two things are the most important points for console gaming, they keep the business going and allow risks which results in more varied games which is also in the best interest of gamers.

Thanks for your 2 cents Rol, but I'm not sure about the whole "replacing PC" thing. And sorry but games ARE the main draw of the console. Kutaragi has said many times that Playstation consoles are primarily for gaming. The point of giving it other features is just plain logic.

If the PSone is gonna use CD's for games, why not allow it to play music CD's?

If the PS2 is gonna use DVD's for games, why not allow it to play DVD movies?

If the PS3 is gonna use Blu-ray for games, why not allow it to play Blu-ray movies?

Basically, if the hardware is already inside the console, it costs next to nothing to add the ability to play these types of media. A gaming system is a computer. It's a no-brainer value to a consumer to purposely allow it to let them browse the web, look at photos, play music, etc. If the hardware can do it, then why not? If it becomes the centerpiece of the living room, is that a bad thing???

I'm happy as hell that I don't need to buy a DVD player or a Blu-ray player, etc.

If Sony doesn't care about games, then why have they put so much effort into games like Uncharted, Motorstorm, Resistance, Killzone2, etc.???

"It's questionable how much Sony cares for console gaming and gamers after all their actions this generation" - Besides starting off with an expensive price tag, what are all these actions you're talking about???

I personally prefer Sony consoles, but I respect both Sony and Nintendo equally. I own an N64, Gamecube, PS2, and PS3.

Whether you want to believe it or not, Nintendo and Sony are great gaming companies that do honest business. MS on the other hand is anything but honest. From releasing faulty hardware to bribing developers, it's obvious they want to monopolize gaming and the needs of their customers is just an afterthought.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha... seriously... your delusions are on a whole other level if you believe that Nintendo(who's 80s business practices brought into law all kinds of things to protect publishers and developers) and Sony who installed rootkit shit on your computer just because you wanted to listen to their legally bought music.

Try this link: http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=sony_bullshit

excerpts:

You may know Sony most readily as the company that recently recalled something on the order of every laptop battery ever made because of a small glitch (they explode). Then there was the "rootkit" debacle, where Sony secretly installed hidden bullshit on your computer. One of Sony BMG's presidents handled the situation with the delicacy of a gang rape with this quote: "Most people, I think, don't even know what a rootkit is, so why should they care about it?" Good point, shit-head! And before that, Sony was known for its shitty optical drives in their PS2s, resulting in a class action lawsuit. The word "shitty" in the previous sentence is a bit misleading, since I also use the word to describe Renée Zellweger's life, and having to void your warranty by adjusting a cog to fix a misaligned laser inside your PS2 is slightly shittier.

@ Cueil

I read the same arguments from way before the PS3 launched and now we are years past that and for some reason usually vivid 360 fans aren't able to let it go.

Will the same arguments be made when the PS4 launches?

Sony is a huge international company, employing many people, multiple the amount a mamoth monopolistic well more profitable company like Microsoft employs. Sony is competing in many different technology markets. People make mistakes, the more you do the more potential there is for mistakes.

I think Sony as a company has and is already paying for that?

IMO overall they did an excellent job on the PS3 hardware.

Apart from the mis-steps you mention, Sony appears to have an excellent reputation regarding product quality and overall consumer satisfaction.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

...and your immaturity is on a whole new level.

I was OBVIOUSLY refering to Sony's gaming division. I'm not concerned with their computer or music divisions.

And that has to be the stupidest link I've ever had the displeasure of clicking on. Was that article written by a retarded kid??? While there are some vague truths in it, 90% of it is a fanboy hate rant. The dipshit just makes all kinds of allegations without backing up anything. Most people use links to point to facts about their arguements. This idiot starts with a partial truth, then his PMS kicks in and he justs bitches like a little girl until his head explodes. Great way to show credibility.

Here's a quote from the homepage "This page is about me and why everything I like is great. If you disagree with anything you find on this page, you are wrong."

If this is who you get your info from, you should probably move back in with your parents. Apparently you still need some guidance.

btw, nice pic of yourself trying to formulate a thought. Looks like you're trying real hard

Quite true. He brings up what Nintendo did in the 80's and what Sony did in 2001. Both companies have come a long way since then.

Every company makes mistakes. Good companies just don't make the same mistake twice(like how the PS3's failure rate is very very low). Lesson learned.

Then we have Microsoft who not only repeats their own mistakes, they even repeat their competition's mistakes, lol.

Microsoft Board Meeting, 2005: "So last generation Sony's PS2 had a certain degree of disc read error problems and they won. Faulty hardware must have been the secret to their success! This generation we will take it one step further. Instead of just an occasional disc read error, we'll have the entire system fail! And it will be much more common, say at least 33% of our consoles will have this feature! BRILLIANT! Begin production immediately! Oh and lay off the entire quality control division, we won't be needing them."
