M$ don't give a shit about console gaming or gamers for that matter. So Sony and Nintendo have consoles that to some degree threaten Windows. If M$ was confident in their OS they would simply work hard to make sure it stays ahead of the curve of anything the consoles have.

Healthy competition is good for consumers and it drives companies to innovate and make quality products. Unfortunately M$ will never see it this way and will waste billions of dollars trying to stomp Sony and Nintendo into the ground instead of spending that money making quality products.

At this rate, M$ is losing 5 billion $ per generation. Maybe after a few generations, they will finally back out of console gaming and let Sony and Nintendo do what they do best:)

The goal of PlayStation always was to replace PCs. Kutaragi saw Microsoft as their biggest competition even before they entered the market with the Xbox. The PS3 comes closest to the original vision of Kutaragi, i.e. gaming only being a part of the system and not even necessarily the main draw of the console.

It's questionable how much Sony cares for console gaming and gamers after all their actions this generation. Similar to Microsoft they see console gaming and gamers as gateway to their greater goal: a set-top-box for the living room.

Microsoft doesn't really see Nintendo as a threat, the Wii doesn't aim to be a set-top-box, it's simply a game console for the most part. All the big money of Microsoft goes to blocking Sony, be that creating substitutes for popular PlayStation only games or buying third party exclusivity. The attempts to compete with Nintendo are usually halfassed (even Microsoft's "casual" games seem to copy PS games) and Microsoft didn't even mind to release Viva Pinata on the DS.

The point of my post: Nintendo is the only company out of the three that really cares for console gaming and gamers (yes, I am aware that this may sound insane to some people). The industry would have headed towards selfdestruction if it weren't for the Wii and DS which appeal to a large number of people and have by far the lowest development costs of the current generation systems (Wii vs. PS3/360 and DS vs. PSP). These two things are the most important points for console gaming, they keep the business going and allow risks which results in more varied games which is also in the best interest of gamers.

Thanks for your 2 cents Rol, but I'm not sure about the whole "replacing PC" thing. And sorry but games ARE the main draw of the console. Kutaragi has said many times that Playstation consoles are primarily for gaming. The point of giving it other features is just plain logic.

If the PSone is gonna use CD's for games, why not allow it to play music CD's?

If the PS2 is gonna use DVD's for games, why not allow it to play DVD movies?

If the PS3 is gonna use Blu-ray for games, why not allow it to play Blu-ray movies?

Basically, if the hardware is already inside the console, it costs next to nothing to add the ability to play these types of media. A gaming system is a computer. It's a no-brainer value to a consumer to purposely allow it to let them browse the web, look at photos, play music, etc. If the hardware can do it, then why not? If it becomes the centerpiece of the living room, is that a bad thing???

I'm happy as hell that I don't need to buy a DVD player or a Blu-ray player, etc.

If Sony doesn't care about games, then why have they put so much effort into games like Uncharted, Motorstorm, Resistance, Killzone2, etc.???

I personally prefer Sony consoles, but I respect both Sony and Nintendo equally. I own an N64, Gamecube, PS2, and PS3.

 

Whether you want to believe it or not, Nintendo and Sony are great gaming companies that do honest business. MS on the other hand is anything but honest. From releasing faulty hardware to bribing developers, it's obvious they want to monopolize gaming and the needs of their customers is just an afterthought.
