Forums - Sales - Is The GTA Series Dying CNBC Is Pondering It

CNBC is wondering if slow sales for The Lost and the Damned and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars are pointing to an overall slowdown for the series. The site points to analysts' estimates that only 1 million of those 13 million who bought GTA IV picked up the first DLC for the game, and to the crummy 89,000 units the DS title moved in March.

We're not sure we're on board with CNBC's theory just yet, though. The market for GTA IV's DLC was already split because of its 360 exclusivity and Chinatown Wars is a hardcore game on what's largely thought of as a casual system. What do you think?

I dont think it is, the next gta should be big b/c hopefully rockstar learn its lesson with all the negative media saying they want elements from SA and Vice City so they might go all out with that, and not to mention Saints Row has entered the game.  If GTA LatD came to the PS3 i would buy 500k copies of it like i did with RE5 for the PS3 thats why its still ahead of the 360 version

Well, I can't comment on DLC, as we have no real numbers, just people's guesses that to my knowledge aren't even based on retail sales. It would be like me picking a number out of the hat.

As for Chinatown Wars, it is too early to call on the game. Plenty of DS games did poorly off the start only to sell millions. Will this happen with Chinatown? who knows, but it could.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Nobody cares about DLC *that* much and Chinatown Wars is a horrible example. If anything, it just shows that that kind of game doesn't cater to the DS audience

I don't think it's dying. For example, look at GT4P and look GT4 sales. Sure the DLC didn't do as good but who says the series is dying?

but hopefully Rockstar learns their lesson from the negative feedback. Hopefully they can mix in GTA SA with IV (realism wise) and we'll get one hell of a game. As for the DS, GTA on the gameboy didn't even do well so I wasn't expecting it to do well on the DS

Favorite films. Foreign films forever!

No.The games keep on getting praise from critics. The most recent one for the DS is consider one of the best games of the handle.

Wow who ever wrote this at CNBC needs to get fired

Since when is 1 million bad for a DLC? not to mention GTAIV has passed the 10 million mark with a smaller userbase last year?

No. GTAIV did great.

Because some DLC didn't do main series sales and a spin-off for the DS didn't have a great first month you think something's wrong??

13 million is what the 360 and PS3 versions sold combined.

No it isn't.

Things always fluctuate a bit per generation and the fact that gtaIV wasn't on the market leading console and still managed enormous sales really attests to the brands strength.

I wouldn't be surprised if the pc sales are significantly diminished however due to the technical issues the port had though.

It sold 24,429 last week over both consoles (which excludes whatever it also sold on the pc).
