Same answer I always give:

If you start excluding, or making out as special, certain games for one reason or another, where does it stop? Most of the games in the VGC top 50 would need asterisks.

Wii Sports - Bundled, therefore doesn't count
Wii Fit - People could be buying it for the board, therefore doesn't count
Monster Hunter G - It's a port so it "would have sold higher" if it had been new, therefore doesn't count
Pokemon Platinum - It's 99% the same game as D/P, why is it counted seperate, therefore doesn't count
MKWii - People could be buying for the wheel, therefore doesn't count
Wii Play - People buy for the controller, therefore doesn't count
Killzone 2 - Bundling distorts sales, therefore doesn't count
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Only selling because people buy both, therefore doesn't count
Professor Layton - It's just a compilation of puzzles that already exist in print, therefore doesn't count
New Super Mario Bros. - Bundling distorts sales, therefore doesn't count
The Godfather II - Multplat means some people buy both, therefore doesn't count
Halo 3 - People just bought it for the limited edition 360, therefore doesn't count
Mario Tennis - GC Remake with Wii controls tacked on, therefore doesn't count
Dynasty Warriors - Game isn't high enough quality (OP gave this as a reason), therefore doesn't count

So I can do this too. Maybe every word on VGC should have an asterisk with five pages of qualification and "what if"s.

Sorry but these examples are all stupid.   The difference between all of these and Wii Sports is that you have a CHOICE if you are going to own these or not.  You can buy a Wii or DS and not have to own these.

If you buy a Wii you are getting Wii Sports, like it or not.  Wii Sports is therefor just part of the Wii package and not a sale.

What about people who actually wanted wii sports? Their obvious sales just shouldn't count?

If they want Wii Sports they are fortunate that it is part of the Wii package and they do not have to buy it.

So even if you bought the wii only for wii sports your sales don't count? That's just not fair.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

I still don't understand how people can deny that a sold game is a sold game.

Wow, I'm going to regret even posting in a thread like this, but whatever. I find it funny that no one had an issue with the best selling game being bundled before when it was SMB, no talk of asteriks or nada. But now that its Wii Sports "oh no!!!" man kill this thread, already.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

good... we all agree it is a forced sale or a free item... therefore its sales numbers mean jack.

A force sale is still a sale. I am with NJ5 -- I don't know how people can deny that a sold game is a sold game. Nintnedo builds the price of the game into the cost of the console in non-Japan territories.

What is so funny is this game would be past the 20M mark WITHOUT BUNDLING and people still think it does not matter. (That calculation is based upon roughly 44% of Japanese game buyers buying the game separately).

Bundling is as old as the industry itself.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

wasn't there an article (and a thread) on how Nintendo is selling Wii Sports but not Wii? Actually Wii is bundled with Wii Sports and not the other way around. Therefore, all Wii hardware sold should not count and MS is the real leader of this gen console war!

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

I believe we need an asterisk for txrattlesnakes comments stating "*I am bulshitting in order to rile up fervor and gain useless vg$ by getting users to fight or agree with my BS"

Seriously, when a person doesn't have an open mind, forgets that there are people with different opinions who contribute to the makeup of this world and must be counted, you end up with this dribble...

"My opinion matters more than yours, therefore blah blah blah" makes zero-shit sense and needs to stop...or at least treated with little attention...

We need to treat this post as it should be, like a whining little toddler's screams. If you don't get your way, whining about it in the real world doesn't get you anywhere...just makes you look stupid. This goes to all other whiners as well, in all three camps.

Explanation of sig:

I am a Pakistani.....my name is Dan....how hard is that? (Don't ask about the 101...apparantely there are more of me out there....)

Back in the Day I have known people who sold Wiis in the atermarket. He had to assure people he had Wii Sports and that the system came with Wii Sports and he even had to open the box and show a few people that it did in fact come with Wii Sports.

It may not be the most technical game ever. It is a fun game and whether or notyou or I like it it is responsible for the Wii sales...Hint it was selling like Hot Cakes before SSBB and MKWii and even SMG. It didn't sell on Nintendo's name alone and the controller while a lure nobody buys a game system for a controller with no games to play.

Comparing Wii ports current annual sales to games 1 year newer then it is retarded those two games you mentioned MKWii and Wii Fit have monster legs just like Wii Sports does in Japan they are just further up the channel and it is a very weak argument.

Comparing it to games that have been out over a year longer with total sales is a bit more fair but then again still shows bias because you still have a whole additional year in sales in NSMBs case and 4 practical years of sales in SMBs case.

You do buy Wii Sports because it was more expensive in the US and Europe than Japan.

Finally WSR will be the true test of this and I predict higher sales for that in Japan.
