Alan Wake has been in development for AT LEAST close to 5 years (they showed some of the actual graphics running on PC at E3 2005). Heavy Rain has been in development for 2 years and look at those pics I provided side by side with Alan Wake. That speaks volumes. God of War is no different from other development teams. MOST of the budget goes to the artists...period. I would expect the same for Alan Wake as well. Here is Too Human's budget (go to #7 for Halo 3). I'm a PS3 owner, so I can wait for untapped potential. However, PC guys aren't suppose to have to wait to outperform a console at anything, right? I thought that was what all the hoop-la of paying $600 for a GPU and $1000 for a CPU was about. Otherwise, what's the point of spending all the money? Alan Wake IS the 1st game to take advantage of an Intel quad core. Other PC games aren't truly multi-threaded to take full advantage of a quad core anything. Other games just break off a trival portions of the code to be run on the 3rd and 4th cores. Those cores are completely idle most of the time. |
Remedy is actually a fairly small studio. Furthermore they run on their own schedule. It will be done when its done.

Theres proof that all four cores are being used.
That link for budget doesn't prove anything, KZ2's budget was less than $40,000,000 and how do I know this? GOW 3 is the most expensive 1st party PS3 game @$40,000,000 directly quoted. Its likely an estimate because I've never seen a real stated budget.
Why do PC gamers spend $300 for a GPU and $250 for a CPU? Because they want mods, because they want the best IQ, because they want to game at 60FPS, because they want control over how the game runs etc.
Tease.

Also, PCs offer far more than just gaming. Video, audio processing, etc. Personally, I would not spend an incredible amount on a PC solely for gaming. I could justify it because of its other uses though.
Graphics don't blow me away. They just add to the overall treat when a titles game play is outstanding.

What does running on "their own schedule" have to do with anyway? They have about as much time freedom as any other studio (except studios that produce yearly titles).
Interesting link you provided. Crysis wasn't originally written for better performance beyond a dual core, so that's interesting indeed. If SOMEHOW they have truly multithreaded their code, the Cell is REALLY outperforming Intel quad core CPUs in gaming with PLENTY of room to grow! However, "truly multi-threaded" means the game scales up with the increase of cores. Those games in your link are most likely NOT "truly multi-threaded". At least, they have gotting further than I thought they had at this point.
Why will you deny the link I provided? Unless you can provide a more accurate list, the one I provided stands.
Also, you changed my question ($600 for a GPU and $1000 for a CPU). You talked about a new GPU will come out by the end of this year with 5 TFLOPs. That GPU will cost around $600 or more. The current top CPU from Intel is $1000. You know, the one that's weaker for games than the Cell. How can that be justified for a gaming PC over a $400 PS3? I can't see the logic in it. All that just for 60fps most of the time and the highest texture resolutions?

However, a $600 GPU can't be justified for audio processing. Video processing would be VERY hard to justify a $600 GPU (or even a $300 GPU). I do a little audio and accelerated video processing on the PS3 under Linux. You can even do a little audio and video editing under the PS3 game OS (in XMB). Total cost...$600 around 2 1/2 years ago. It gives me more access to the latest titles than a gaming PC, too.
Of course, I still use my PCs for things too, but gaming isn't one of them anymore.
