Forums - Sony - Don't you think Sony First party studios spend too much time & money on ...

As far as i believe every Sony first party game studio spend considerable time and effort on first developing a game engine and than a game. and most of the time only two or three games and then either the series is droppped or Sony release a new console.

See the list of Engines

-  Infamous developed new engine (only 1 game on it so far)

- GG developed special engine for KZ2 (developed only 1 game on it)

- ND developed engine for Uncharted, (now developing second game on it)

- MM also developed special engine for LBP ( only 1 game on it)

- i think Insomniac also developed special engine for resistance (2 game on it)

- Polyphony i think is developing a new engines for GT5 from scratch..

and many more

the problem i see although few of these engines were necessary but others i feel could be avoided.  the most i fear is that many of these engines will become useless when Sony will launch PS4.

So i think Sony waste too much resources on developing the platform/engines which become obsolete or which have to be discarded every generation. PS2 engines can;t be updated to use PS3 Cell Chip.. similarly i believe PS4 will be a totally different architecture (seeing the last three playstations). so if sony can somehow get a way to make its first party game studios to make fewer and better game engines and spend more resources and time of these game studios to crank out games, than it will definitely help Sony a lot. or better yet Sony can develop an ISA for its platstation chip so that atleast these game engines just need updates or modification, and old engines are not discarded at the end of every console generation.

What are your opinion.?

ps. this is just my opinion based on some observation.. and being a naive abt game devleopment i may be technically totally wrong..

Think about that for a minute.

Team Ico is probably also making/ using a new engine for ICO 3, and I know that Insomniac uses the same engine for all there PS3 title's, and they have released 4 games this gen.

Edit:

You forgot that White Knight Chronicles is also using is own engine.

resistance, R&C FTOD, R&C FQFB, and resistance 2 all use the same engine. They modify/add to/remove from the engine for each release.

Well the ICE team, working at ND are working towards more sharing of technologies.

Though all these teams use different engines, they do share technology, especially ND & Insomniac

What you need to know is this... the amount of time/money spent on these new engines will just bring about more games using the engines.

So really, i dont think so as i expect to selots more games using some of the game engines you noted

Good thread !

Many of those titles require something different from their engines, and since the developers already help each other out with their engines (tech advice, stuff like that), it doesn't get much better.
Besides, it's important for the programmers to know their engine, so they can utilize it as best as possible, which is best done by constructing the engine themselves. There is a reason Epic Games are the ones pushing the Unreal engines, and not so much everyone else.

sorry i missed the R&C... but still each game studio is making a new game engine at the start of the console generation.. so i think they can surely increase the collaboration

No..I think Sony had planned their every move and it worked well for them...Lionhead took years making Fable 2 and you can't compare it to the worst of Sony's ps3 games...Although fable is supposed to be a very solid game....but my point is Sony has done well in making their teams push the development muscle up a noch...An something new from ICO will send shivers down the spines of the most Fanboy of Fanboys over at the other 2 camps....Believe it...

That is because of 10 years plan,
PS3 is only 2 years on the market,
so don`t worry. =)
There will be Killzone 3 and Resistance 3 in 2-3 years.

p.s. also, at some way, Infamous and Uncharted 2 engines look to me like they had same source.

Don`t forget about God of War 3 engine, MotorStorm engine, Getaway 3 engine and 8 days engine. =)
