There Are No Gays In Star Wars

BioWare take their Star Wars role-playing seriously. So seriously that the developers are shutting down talk on Old Republic's message boards about homosexuality, because it's a term that does "not exist in Star Wars".

Yes, if you care to trawl around the site, there are a few threads that either began as, or devolved into, discussion of how the game - or the game's future player base - would handle gay relationships. And those threads are now locked. A thread complaining about those threads being locked (along with the words "homosexual", "lesbian" and "gay" being censored on the boards) has now also been locked, with BioWare's community manager Sean Dahlberg posting succinctly:

As I have stated before, these are terms that do not exist in Star Wars.

Thread closed.

OK, but...they do, uh, realise that the people actually playing the game do not exist in Star Wars either, right? They're real people?

GLBT discrimination in forums?

Which is pretty funny. C-3PO is as effeminate and camp as you can get. Boba Fetts best mate and second in command, Goran Beviin, is in a Gay relationship throughout all of his appearances in the EU.

Now im not sure exactly whether they mean "There are no words to specify sexuality in Star Wars" or if they mean "There are NO GAYS in Star Wars" but either way its a little messed up.

I suppose i can kind of understand why they wouldn't want people discussing sexuality, it could end up causing alot of unnecessary strife in the game world when it's released, but i still think effectively suppressing it is just as wrong.

Its bioware, what did you expect?

They've been getting progressively worse since bg2 released.

Lol... now this is funny :P Well anyways, who cares? Its not like their game will eb able to compete with WoW... its a big developer, and a big IP but I doubt that it will be much bigger then lets say Warhammer or LotR online ;)

I'm not fond of the censorship of board posts and threads. That said I'm glad they are keeping that aspect out of the game. MMOs are already gay enough seeing as MOST of the female characters you see are dudes playing them and then other dudes hitting on them. If you want to be gay in the old republic then you could still PM it up with your same sexed lover. I'm just glad I won't have to watch two half naked Jedi dudes making out when I go to the auction.

That's really the diff with MMOs and other games. You can be gay in the Sims and Mass Effect, no problem, because you choose to be gay and then watch the results. In an MMO if you choose to be gay you could potentially subject every other player to your choice, even if they are offended by it.

Really, I have no problem with gay people enjoying their chosen lifestyle but I just have a problem with this thought that gayness must be injected into every single aspect of media until it is saturated everywhere. Remember a majority of people in this world are not gay so why shove it down their throats?

In space, no one can hear you gay.

Don't forget how enthusiastically he ate Luke Skywalker's hot dog.
