Forums - Sales - PS3 has no game to counter Halo ODST this year...

Hey guys,

we know PS3-fans like to hype their games, especially on this site. We saw this with Resistance2 and LBP last year and with Killzone and inFamous this year. But the sales were not as huge as some might have hoped. Some people said Resistance2 had a chance to outsell Gears of War2 or LBP would be the entrance for casual gamers to get a PS3.

Last Xmas the Xbox360 crushed the PS3 especially on the software-side. Here is a comparison of the last Xmas lineup. First the most successful multiplat games

  1. Call of Duty World at War - Xbox360: 5.33 million ; PS3: 3.19 million
  2. Fallout 3 - Xbox360: 2.29 million ; PS3: 1.38 million
  3. Far Cry 2 - Xbox360: 1.35 million ; PS3: 950k
  4. Dead Space - Xbox360: 770k ; PS3 580k

The top selling exclusives:

  1. Gears of War 2 - Xbox360: 4.8 million
  2. Fable 2 - Xbox360: 2.70 million
  3. LBP - PS3: 2.16
  4. Left 4 Dead - Xbox360:  2.09 million
  5. Resistance 2 - PS3: 1.57 million

So Xbox360 won last holiday season.

This season, it is all about the release of GT5. That is the only exclusive game that could outsell Halo ODST. If GT5 gets a 2010 release, this years holiday season will be like the past. Halo ODST will do even crazier numbers than Gears of War 2 did. God of War will do good numbers but nowhere near Halo ODST. The 2009 release of God of War 3 is still doubtful btw. Forza Motorsports 3 is very likely to be released this holiday season. Games like Heavy Rain, Resistance, Uncharted 2 just do not have the impact like a Halo this year or a Gears of War last year.

Multiplat games like Modern Warfare2, Bioshock2, Assassins Creed2 will sell better on the Xbox360, too. So I expect the Xbox360-Software to outsell the PS3-Software by a decent margin. Just like last year.

Do you agree? Which PS3-game could match Halo ODST saleswise?

Only GT5 can match up to Halo ODST I think, but I don't see why Sony need a counter for it. Just like Microsoft or Sony having a counter to Mario Kart Wii would have been useless.

Well it would be really sad if the ps3 sold more software

GT5, FFXIII (in Japan), GOW III, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain and InFamous

vs.

Halo 3 expansion pack and...

...

Sony must be real scared.

Don't be ridiculous. We both know WarDevil will do 6 million first week.

You're counting the total sold of the titles released in the holdiay season, rather than the actual software sold during that season. That's a rather odd way to do it, and it gives an immensely flawed result.

If you're really interested in checking the data, you should look at the overall software sold, not just the "top 5 titles".

Take the Wii. Look at the top 5 LT. They total out 73.5M.

For the X360, they merely total out 34.9M

Does that mean that the Wii has sold over twice as much software? No, of course not - it's barely sold 30% more.

So really, measuring success by only the top selling is completely flawed. It serves for little more than faking proof.

Now, look at the total software in the holiday season. That's far more interesting.

Wii: 68.5M

DS: 62M

X360: 44.6M

Ps3: 28M

PsP: 11M (lacking data though)

That gives a far more precise and correct view.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

I think the ps3 will win in term of overall quality and variety. As long as PS3 owners have a better and wider range of new releases then it doesn't matter how much is sold.

PSN ID: T_Gears

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

The 360 should sell more software for the simple reason that its userbase is bigger. If I were Sony, I wouldn't worry about Forza 3. It really wasn't a big series until bundling started, and I expect Forza 3 (if it comes out this holiday season) to be outsold by Need for Speed with all platforms combined.

Microsoft said early on that they will attempt to control each holiday season by flipping between the Gears and Halo IPs. This is why we won't be seeing a Gears of War game on the PS3 any time soon, because Microsoft isn't going to give it up.

I don't know enough about Halo: ODST to make any predictions, but I'd be more worried about what the Wii will do. Even the 360's biggest hits might not look so big compared to what the Wii could do. And of course, these are all hypotheticals.

good point. Did not mean to spin data in any form.

But the relation of the top 5 selling titles and the overall software is pretty much the same, isn't it? Xbox360 sold 50% more software overall, according to the numbers you listed. If you compare this with the numbers I listed (multiplat games) this is very accurate.

TBH Halo is getting a bit overused my MS these days! I mean do they really have no other option rather than to re-hash several different versions/add-ons to the Halo franchise??

I mean i would think it is better that Sony are focusing on making new IP's rather than making more and more of the same game!

Halo is good and all but even that has its limits!
