Lock On! Unreleased PSP Gun Controller Found

By Spencer . April 27, 2009 . 2:26pm

The PSP has lots of gizmos. A GPS unit, camera, possibly a remote control car too. This uncovered design for a motion detecting gun controller didn’t come from Sony. A picture from a patent scan shows third party accessory maker MadCatz was working the product, but their name isn’t on the registered US patent. Doesn’t matter too much since someone was developing a gun controller for the PSP.

The concept behind the PSP gun controller was to add realism to first person shooter games. Users would mount their PSP to the shell and pull the trigger to “press” X. Buttons for triangle, square, circle, and left shoulder are also on the gun controller. Press any button and the PSP gun controller sends commands to the PSP via IR. The motion sensor handles movement.

Since the gun controller senses motion, sends wireless signals, and rumbles it needed a power source. The patent proposed it was going to be powered with 4 AA batteries or drain power energy from the PSP via the USB port.

Chances are the device is in the graveyard, but if it came out would you buy it? Sony or a third party developer could have made Silent Scope or a laser tag style game with the gun controller.

Wow, that looks very neat.

How wonderfully portable.

It does look neat... but I think it would be better used as something between PSP and PS3.... so you could play an FPS on the PS3 with the extra screen (which as an example could serve as the zoom screen for sniping)

It's a silly thing for a portable device alone though.

haha, no... I'll only advertise the website when I make a new thread.

OT: That gun is a pretty cool concept. When you move the gun, the point of view would move in an FPS. You wouldn't need a TV at all. If something like this ever came out, it would control better than any FPS game ever made, since it would be true to life.
