Forums - Sales - Same point in time: PS3 3.5 million sales ahead of X360

Microsoft are scared of Sony. The PS3 has the sales momentum and it will continue to outsell XBox 360 in same point in time sales. PS3 is going to reach the optimum sales price and XBox 360 will have nothing left to respond to PS3. PS3 is going to win the race over XBox 360 in total console sales ltd. The same point in time sales margin is likely to widen in favour of PS3 over time. The PS3 will overtake the XBox 360 in total console sales. Just you all wait and see. PS3 is going to win.

Same point in time sales when comparing PS3 with XBox 360 is a reasonable sales analysis. We align the sales of both consoles from their launches and we see that the PS3 has sold 3.5 million more consoles in its first 2.5 years than the XBox 360. This corresponds to PS3 selling 20% more consoles in same price and guess what at a higher price than the XBox 360 during the same period of 2.5 years.

By doing this we are comparing apples with apples and its a fair analysis. In the long run PS3 will outsell the XBox 360 in total console sales. Seeing the numbers on the screen today does not tell the whole story of how the two consoles are performing in terms of sales. When PS3 price drops PS3 sales will surge pass the XBox 360. I use facts and VGC sales figures I am not a fan boy.

@koweniecki
1. PS3 will overtake XBox 360 in total console sales before 31 December 2011. Due to PS3 price cut - reaching mass market priice of $299, exclusive games: GT 5, God of War 3, FF Versus XIII, FFXIII exclusive to Japan region and many more PS3 exclusives games will boost PS3 sales.
2. PS3 will sell 12 million consoles for 2009. 2009 PS3 price cut will boost sales in final quarter of 2009. End of 2009 total for PS3 around 31 million.
3. XBox 360 will sell 10 million consoles for 2009 roughly the same as 2008. End of 2009 total for XBox 360 around 37 million.

I've nothing to add, as this has been posted before, but its amazing how the one sure way to generate a big thread is to compare PS3/360 sales in some form that implies PS3 may overtake 360.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I never understood something. Maybe you can explain...

Does one feel good when they have reasons which help justify the fact that ones favourite console is in last place saleswise?

No, but it does feel good to have more exclusives then 360. What are your options, Halo or Gears of War?

Does PS3 have more exclusives?  Maybe we should have someone verify this article, but according to this, the PS3 has far more mutiplatform games then Xbox 360.

Seriously you really need to think about what you say.

2009 so far...Week ending January 10th through weekending Apr 25th (May 2nd week doesnt include US or Japan yet)

360 has sold 2,704,178 in 16 weeks for an average of 168,030 per week
PS3 has sold 2,302,568 in 16 weeks for an average of 143,910 per week

The 360 will need to sell 7,295,524 to hit 10 million before the end of the year
The PS3 will need to sell 9,697,432 to hit 12 million before the end of the year

35 weeks left this year.

360 needs to sell 208,443 on average each week to hit 10 million before the end of the year
PS3 needs to sell 277,069 on average each week to hit 12 million before the end of the year

So your saying that on average the remainder of the year the PS3 sales will get nearly a 100% bump and the 360 sales will get a little more than a 20% bump.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

*opens thread with smile*

*ohhh...* *smile dies*

*takes out gun and fires two bullets in the screen*

*sleep, thread, sleep forever like the duke*

PS3 will have a price cut post E3 09' PS3 will take off in sales and leave the X360 in its wake. X360 was trailing the PS3 this time last year by about the same margin for the year trailing by more than a million for first half of 2008 the 360 ended up winning only because of the two price cuts. Hearing about the X360 price cuts I was so upset. PS3 was within 5.5 million consoles of XBox 360 last year and X360 ended up getting to 7.5 million in front of PS3 by end of 2008. Just you all wait and see PS3 will turn things around with PS3 price cut. PS3 can outsell XBox 360 by 2 million for 2009.

Sorry but aligning launches is not a fair comparison.  It leaves out too many variables such as:

1. People were waiting for the other options before making a console decision

2. Microsofts console alone for a year was facing much cheaper "last gen" consoles still being sold

3. MS launching early is undoubtedly a big reason behind RROD.  Without RROD and launching with the other 2 consoles, MS could likely be doing even better and absolutely destroy Sony

4. The original Xbox userbase was not that large, and not every Xbox fan was jumping over right away by any means

Also, try not to make all your claims as facts.  We have no idea if/when/or how much a Sony PS3 price cut would be.  In fact, all logical information and Sony claims state there will not be a cut until they are profitable on the PS3, which will likely be a few more months before they start breaking even on PS3 hardware sales.

Couldn't we just get someone who has the data in an good format to load it into Matlab or some other program and check the correlation coefficient between the two time series. If it is is other than 1 then this sort of straight scaling argument is pointless.
