Aligning the sales from their launches makes it fair to both PS3 and XBox 360. PS3 has a 10 year lifespan Sony has said this many time over and I am certain the PS3 will sell for 10 years. Sony always delivers on its promises. On the other hand XBox 360 will be lucky if it sells for 7 years . Original XBox was finished after 5 years and Microsoft like to rip off their consumers by making regular upgrades. |

Sorry, but that is one of the most ignorant and incorrect analytical attempts anyone has ever tried to make on these boards.
First off, in a vacuum of time and space, sure, but the xbox 360 didn’t start off at the same point as the ps3, since Sony was arguably the #1 electronics company, and had demolished the competition in the last generation of console. Comparatively, that’s like saying if Sony launches an opearitng system, and claims a greater market share than M$, simply because of an earlier launch that you have to consider that as the most critical trend line…WRONG! If you spoke to ANY market analysts (and MANY people did), Sony was expected to launch the ps3 and continue it’s dominance. This is like in professional sports, if you’re an A-List star, you’re starting spot is yours to lose…and that’s EXACTLY what happened with Sony.
With regard to lifetime of consoles, there are STILL Xbox functioning without a hitch, and this flies in the face of all those people critical of the Xbox family being maintenance problems. In fact, it was my experience that the original was the most reliable console of the last gen. The Xbox 360 had a rough start because M$ made a tactical decision to launch the console when it did, because it needed to make up a lot of ground in counter the global reach of the playstation family…standing at where we are today…it worked, and the growing market share proves it. This is a business, no some kiddie lemonade stand, as many fanboys seem to think this is.
So this brings us to the issue of console lifespan…only a moron would believe that 360 will suffer the fate of the original Xbox. M$ has stress the very valid point that they didn’t do a solid enough job of getting efficiencies built into the lifecycle cost of the original Xbox line. THAT didn’t happen this generation, so you can expect to see the production cost of the consoles DECREASE and continue to be produced at breakeven to retail price…at the very least. With that in mind, M$ is a software company, so you can fully expect that they will ensure full B/C with the next Xbox to make the transition seamless for developers and owners. With, in 7-8 years from launch, we will probably see the 360 selling for $99, at the launch of the nexbox, rather than a discontinued line.
