I've been reading all the topics about how Wii is attracting casual adult gamers and expanding the market, and despite my Nintendo loyalties I was skeptical that just Wii could achieve this, especially considering Sony's efforts aimed at this market in the past mainly attracting existing demographics.
My parents are technically aware and have jobs in science and engineering, but until now have been disinterested in what video games I had, even when I tried to get them to play Mario Kart, Golf and Tennis.
They had played Wii Sports for a while after I bought my Wii, and enjoyed it but the game is rather short and they never indicated they would be interested in future Wii games.
However today my mum came in and said she'd saw an advert for MySims, it looked nice and it was just what she was looking for (having played The Sims 2 and dislike the "real life" aspect of it).
Then my dad came in and said his work collegues were discussing Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 for the Wii and how good it was.
Then my mum, while looking for MySims on an internet shopping site, had watched a video for Boogie and liked the look of that too.
I asked them why they'd never been interested before, and they said they had found previous video games too hard to control but the Wii Remote combined with the simple but clear graphics of these games had made them want to at least try the new games.
Maybe the Wii is truly the beginning of a revolution in the demographics of gamers. If my parents are interested in Wii games, this surely must reflect changing attitudes everywhere. I just hope Nintendo won't aim Mario, Metroid, Zelda and Smash Bros. at this market too much because I have games I want too.
