Jody Wykle, from Lake Wales, Florida, wanted to buy a Nintento DS and Guitar Hero: On Tour for her kid’s birthday, so she went to Walmart and got them. When she got home, she handed the gifts to her 16 years old son, who unpacked them. “A box of rocks ? Mom, that ain’t a joke,” the kid said after he discovered in the Nintendo DS box some rocks and Chinese newspapers.

Jody went back to Walmart and they said it’s none of their business what’s in the box, so she called local news and told them the story. After that, his mother bought another DS for her kid, so he can play on his birthday. Then Walmart refunded the DS and also offered her a gift card and that’s all thanks to the media.

Kotaku reports that this isn’t an isolated case and boxes of rocks have been returned before to Walmart.

Screw that. After all the stuff I have been hearing about Walmart I'm never going to buy a game related item there again. Or I will open the box right in front of an employee so they can't blame me for their fault.

I do find it strange that the newspapers were Chinese.  I have returned many things to Walmart including game consoles, and they usually do not check in the box!

Interesting. Every time I return an item at a Wal-Mart, the box is opened, the barcode on the device scanned - and they will ship it to a recycle center where it will be resold as broken parts and/or refurbished. Wal-Mart and other retailers CAN NOT put a used item back on the shelf.

I have worked retail for years - Gamestop is the only place something like this could happen. I find it odd that folks will not notice rocks clanging together and the box is factory sealed.

Yeah, right. I'm so calling BS on this.
