What do you think about gaming titles being sold for the PC getting downloaded through torrent sites?

Examples like Demigod:

On April 15th, 2009, Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock released a status report , confirming that the multiplayer component of the game has had serious connectivity issues due to over 102,000 connections made by illegitimate copies of the game. This is as opposed to only 18,000 connections made at the same time from legitimate sources. This number of connections overloaded the game's server infrastructure, meaning it was almost impossible for legitimate players to play the game online.

So because of that, 88% of the gamers were playing a downloaded copy

**Please do not comment about how much you hate this game :) **

Other games for the PC which have been downloaded through torrent sites include:

  • Call of Duty 2
  • Diablo II
  • F.E.A.R.
  • World of Warcraft
  • ...and many other games...

Should game developers face the fact that they should switch to making games for consoles only?

*Update* I'm sorry for posting the same forum in another discussion forum, because I actually wanted to place this in the PC Board. This wouldn't happen again.

There are models that work, like Valve and MMOs with their subscriptions and microtransactions.
Don't know much about WoW, but if that's being pirated, then the problem will be private servers, not the game itself. Which isn't a problem with the actual availability of the game on torrent sites.

They should all switch to the PS3, it still hasn't been hacked.

Not gonna happen. What is happening is that they are just making multiplatform games and just releasing the pc game after their console counterpart so that they insure their sales atleast for the console. Though if anything those developers will go either 360/pc like most current or all 3 systems, not only ps3. Plus who wants to just release a ps3 game only that just doesn't make any sense

What about the Virtual Boy? Has anyone hacked that yet? I mean, it has been out longer than the Ps3!

Virtual Boy it is. *Goes write a lunitec message to some Developer* (why did I capitalize that D?)

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

    Around the Network

There's an emulator for Virtual Boy. Its also not red.

Games are up on torrent not long after or even before there released... This problem is not just with old games

Do not post links to or requests for warez. This is pretty well black and white - posting links to or requests for warez can and will get you banned posthaste. When we say warez, here is what we mean: copies of games, ROMs of console games (not including wholly from scratch creations, subject to any licenses said creations may have), leaked versions of non-yet-released games, even ones that will be freely available in the future. Just because you've got your hot little digital hands on a copy of the Duke Nukem Forever open beta a few years early, doesn't mean that you can share it here.

They should make all games only for consoles, except the subscription based MMOs and free games. PC gaming is infested with pirates.

Unless there's a subscription or something... this is a prob for almost every PC game... perhaps not on such a huge level precentage wise but still huge. I think most game developers fair better on consoles.
