Forums - Sony - Jak and Daxter = Failure

They failed because they didn't sell as much as Crash? That's a high standard to live up to. I think they sold just fine - The only problem was that it didn't really distinguish itself from Ratchet & Clank, and each franchise pumped out a copy every year. I think if they took a year between games, gamers might be more willing to pick up the sequel.

If they failed, why do you want them to bring the series back? You think it will magically sell as much as Crash because it's on the PS3?

I don't think this is entirely fair either, especially as Jak and Daxter came first, and was a very different game to the Ratchet and Clank that came later. However, Jak2 was more Ratchet meets GTA, so it did lose its way a little, I've always thought. Still a great game, though.

I always got the two confused. On the outside, it seemed like they were pretty much the same games.

I agree with you that it didn't distinguish itself from Ratchet enough, and also that pumping out games EVERY year hurt the sales.

So why would I want Jak on Ps3? You answered your own question.... Because it finally has had some time off, so gamers like myself would be willing to pick it up again.

BUT...the question is, even if they did bring Jak back... what kind of game would it be? Considering the first 3 are all very different in terms of game play. That is another way Jak failed. They never even established a niche for it at all.

Yeah, I can understand that, but they were really, really different (albeit both 3D platformers). Ratchet was all traditional 'levels' and guns -- lots of guns. Jak was traditional 3D platforming in a completely open world with astounding draw distances for the PS2, and had no guns at all (although it did had Fireball throwing if you collected the right Eco). In fact, this reminds me of just how awesome and revolutionary (for the time) Jak and Daxter was.

I feel a retro review coming on...

Speaking of Ratchet and Clank...Does anybody else think they should start numbering their games?

It gets really confusing trying to keep up with them. Simple numbering never hurt the big franchises.

Don't say I'm not good to my word:

My VGC User Review of Jak and Daxter

It may have failed in your eyes!

PS2 just had so many games that people didn't have enough money to spend on others, ((unlike PS3.))

Jak N Daxter FTW!

Because they were scorched in Ratchet's infinite blazing glory.

Crash Bandicoot was a legend. He was a memorable character. To be honest, I'd rather Naughty Dog somehow got him back from the eternal torture his current developers are putting him in, than made another Jak game. I like Jak a lot, but Crash was amazing.

A game about a kid with standing up yellow hair and an otter-weasel would never be as popular as Crash Bandicoot.

The original J+D sold over 3 million copies, which is definitely a success. The next one sold 2.3 million, and the third 1.7 million. Those are all very good sales. Sure, it's declining, but that happens to most series games on the same console. Look at MGS2, and MGS3.

By that measure, is Ratchet and Clank a failure? The best selling Spyro did 4.91 million, the best selling Ratchet only 2.93 million. And the latest installment of R&C only sold 1.46 million (granted, on a tiny userbase)

I don't understand why Ratchet shouldn't get Spyro's sales. Crash was clearly superior to Jak, imo, but I think Ratchet and Clank 3 trumps every other Sony first party game, with the exceptions of the God of War games and Shadow of the Colossus.
