Forums - Website Topics - Great - my company has blocked vgchartz.com

I seriously think we work at the same company. As of today the same happened to me.

I do think it's because they block everything with games, to prevent people from playing online games. I'll email the helpdesk monday to ask for VGC approval.

Apparently they've blocked any gaming related website, starting today. Includes ign.com, gamefaqs.com, wiibrew.org and other urls I've tried. Generally I hate this kind of restriction on the employees freedom, but what can you do, other than quit.

Could be worse. Where I work we have a really fast internet connection but are strictly prohibited from browsing websites. In fact we are being audited right now by the IT department lol.

Just to be clear, I working a company with tens of thousands of employees, and this policy now applies to every single one of us. This isn't an outcry over not being able to "slack off" at work, it's just the randomness of filtering that annoys me. Besides, I get through it anyway through remote desktoping, so they're not gonna stop me, if I wanna spend a 5 minute break reading vgchartz instead of chatting at the watercooler, that is my choice.

Oh, so the RGS still works? Good to know. I take it you work in Stavanger?

BengaBenga: Remote desktop (windows terminal service) is blocked, but I use logmein.com, remote desktop through a web-browser. Works like a charm.

And no, I work in Oslo.

It seems most of us use boredom as an excuse to spend company times on personal interest. But responsible employees would find something work related to work on or ask their supervisors to give them assignment during slow times. As a manager of more than 40 employees, this is the work ethics I want to see all my employees have, but seldom find!

Let me put it this way... if people don't waste time reading things on the Internet, they'll spend time daydreaming, taking longer bathroom trips, idling by the watercooler or whatever. Most people have limited focus and energy and they'll always find ways to balance their work time with their resting time.

The argument that employees should be allowed to slack off by reading forums because otherwise they'll just find a different way to slack off is bad one.

You pay employees for 8 or however many hours of work a day and they give you 8 or however many hours of work a day.  If you have employees that want to give you 6 hours of work and spend 2 hours of work reading forums then you probably need new employees.  With today's economy, there's no shortage of people looking for work either.

I think you misunderstood my point. I'm not saying they "should be allowed to slack off". I'm saying they either do or don't, and the ones that do aren't going to work more because you block one of the ways of slacking off. The only thing that's likely to happen is that they'll be less happy with their job. Micro-managing people to change their habits is very hard.

Incidentally I also believe that the vast majority of employees are not equally productive every day. Do you believe otherwise

I notice that most of the people we hired at my company, if they were obsessed with video games, tend not to be very productive.   If their monitor is not within open view of a supervisor, they would play all kinds of games during work hours.   You give them some work assignments, they often do it half heartedly to finish early and try to sneak some game times in.    As a gamer myself, I tried to help these people get some balance back into their work habbit.  But so far I had not been sucessful.    All of these guys,  bright people, we enventually had to let go!

Employers know how much gaming habit can steal their employees valuable productivity.   This is why they blocked gaming sites.   If you finish your assignment early, come bug your boss to give you new assignment.  Organize your desk.  Offer help to people who still have not finish their work. Try to pick up new skill, etc.  There are tons of things you can do during slow times that will benefit your work, help sharpen up job skills, and make you look much better than your peers come times for promotion.

Hmm, it's too much of a coincidence to not be the same company, but I didn't know we had an office in Oslo. Maybe it's a general AT&T thing.

But if your company is Dutch we work at the same company.

And many thanks for the link, that saves me potential emberassing emails from my line manager, lol.

BengaBenga: yeah, we do have a big office in Oslo :)

And don't worry about embarrasing emails, they block stuff, but they don't monitor your use, afaik that is illegal in our country.

well its pretty simple, if your supposed to work for 8 hours and you have 8 hours of work then stay for 10 and disperse 2 hours of breaks in there, everyones happy. - Seriously your there to work, they are paying you to work, so work!

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

Just get in good with your System Admin. The admin that works at my company is less qualified than I am (even though I don't do IT now) and often comes in to ask me questions. My job doesn't require me to have access to the web, but since the admin likes me, and he is the one who makes purchases, they got me a brand new Acer Laptop last year that I get to carry around in my work truck with free mobile access.

It has came in handy when I run into problems and need tech support. I would rather use the internet for its knowledge base than someone on the phone who can't speak English.
