Plain and simple, I have Never Met Anyone that said "why should I switch from VHS to DvD"

Apparently you have never met my mom.......my aunt, my next door neighbor and practically any non techsavy person during that time period.

It offered such a transition that it wasn't even funny...

DvD to Blu-Ray just does not appeal to the masses...  People walk into a store with a Blu-Ray movie being shown on a 32inch, heck even a 42inch and say.... "so????"

Don't believe me, go into a Best Buy or Wal*Mart and look at the Blu-Ray Display...

The best is looking at the movie clips and how crappy a DvD (supposedly) looks in comparison to a Blu-Ray.. I mean come on... you a movie on DvD and they make it look like it's on a 1,000 time watched VHS tape...

Storage means SHIT, when a burner cost a car payment and the Blu-ray Burnable (single layer) Disc cost one tire.. (vehicle owners know how much one tire can cost)....

Prices go down, what about that is so hard to understand. I remember having to pay like 30-60 bucks on a VHS rewinder. Or having to pay 300 bucks for a damn DVD player. Yea, the shit is exspensive.....but it wont be forever.

People can go on and on about storage, but look at the jump drives that are available for $9.99 8gigs each, and they are getting cheaper by the month..

if you are in college these days a jump drive is a must. They have become rabidly popular amongst school goers. Shit, when I was in high school I HAD to get one for one of my classes, manditory. I paid 60 bucks for a 513MB. THey cost like 10bucks now. Let me reiterate, PRICES GO DOWN OVER TIME!!!! THIS proves my point on price deflation. And no one is saying using BD for compact use. Its for DIGITAL MEDIA dude. Movies, and Games. THey benefit from it most.

Would you rather have a (Disc or Burner) were you have to see if it's a +RW or just +R (or) just pop in a USB jump-drive and use it regardless...

You find me a console that is going to be using USB ports for games rather then an disc and we will talk. Find me a company that is going to start releasing their movies on Flash Drives and maybe your point will be valid. Until then, it has nothing to do with the staying ability of BluRay.

ya... exactly...

Tired of hearing about the storage that nobody will spend money on anytime soon, because by the time Blu-ray single layers even (Duel-Layers) become affordable, many, many, things will have more capacity and be even more affordable..

No one is saying it will be soon, it will take years........just like DVD did. And technically people still buy there movies on DVD, a disc format, instead of flash drives which are cheaper and hold more space so I dont know where you are going with that.

If you mean another disc format have more space capacity, thats silly. Wouldn't we be right back where we started? With a disc that holds over 50gb? I thought the space was useless? If they have superior technology it will have one thing for certian.......a much larger price tag then BD has already so why fight BD for a better format which will cost even more? By the time this mythical format can out pace BD, BD will aready be at DVD prices.

Not to mention 100 stack of DvD single layers go for roughly $29.99, but yet a "decade later" 100 Stack of Duel Layers are still expensive... not to mention hard to find, except online..

So?! We get it, DVD is cheaper. Where are you going with this?

O.... USB Jump Drives are scratch resistant...

THey aren't even discs....

You just seem to be an inbittered "older" fellow/lady who has serious issue with the shifting of technology. It happens every now and then without faulter. Sometimes it is just time to move on. I am sure in your Utopian world where tech noever advances, and prices stay very low is ideal. Yet it is not reality.

Did you notice that all new DVD releases have BD advertising on them? Enjoy your Movies and Games being on BD Discs once DVD starts being phased out.

when i can download movies in hd why do i need a blu ray player again?

blu ray = laserdisc

cool but not necessary

Cause the average person doesnt know how to download HD movies, or any movie for that matter. Or they dont care to. By your logic a lot of things arent necessary. Shoot, video games arent really necessary but we all buy them.

The people who don't know how to download movies are the same people who could care less about Blu Ray's....

that's not entirely true. Someone could own a vcr and not know how to record.

vcrs cost 10 to 25 dollars max tho

he made a good point on the people who want blu ray.  theyre the techies

no. I'm just going to start saying "no" when people don't get it.

No..

The "average" person owns an HDTV, enjoys watching movies in HiDef, doesn't know how to download movies, own a VCR and don't know how to hit "record".. ??

This is your average person in your world?

You guys should also put this into consideration. Not all people have a fast internet connection.

ya... well... kinda why I said " I " have never met anyone... right?

It offered such a transition that it wasn't even funny...

Prices go down yes, and also technology comes quicker... look how long VHS was out before DvD, look how long DvD was out before Blu-Ray, newer and better things come out faster and faster, and some are here now... (Digital Download, Media Servers, Quick & Easy Portable Storage)

People can go on and on about storage, but look at the jump drives that are available for $9.99 8gigs each, and they are getting cheaper by the month..

if you are in college these days a jump drive is a must. They have become rabidly popular amongst school goers. Shit, when I was in high school I HAD to get one for one of my classes, manditory mandatory.

Let me reiterate.. There are cheaper ways to go about getting storage for Media : Movies, Music, Games, Now...

(Because I was talking about storage ATP&T)

Would you rather have a (Disc or Burner) were you have to see if it's a +RW or just +R (or) just pop in a USB jump-drive and use it regardless...

were did I mention games or movies in that sentence you replied to?

In any case Digital download is moving in, ever PsP is taking advantage of No Discs, but rather a Memory Card....  Wii even has a Boot from Memoery Card now, not to far off from a Jump-Drive huh?

ya... exactly...

what???? everyone is talking as if it's here, now, cheap, go buy,.. Hence: why I said" tired of hearing it", and it should not take years, if companies want us to have it so badly, make it cheaper quicker. They brought BR out quicker then VHS & DvD, and something better then BR will be out in even a shorter time.. (not to mention, again the things that are out now)

I didn't mean another disc soo........

This was added to the people that talk about Duel Layer +RW/+R Blu-ray's, (as in Not To Mention, or To add) and how they are not going to be cheap even 5 years from now... (see how I cut the time in half from 10 years to 5... read above to see what I'm getting at)

O.... USB Jump Drives are scratch resistant...

THey aren't even discs....

dude...... wtf... really....

at this point.. why the F did you bother to reply, you know I have been talking about alternative Storage like USB Jump Drives... did you read anything?...

no you didn't.

You just seem to be an inbittered "older" fellow/lady who has serious issue with the shifting of technology.

Are you trying to say embittered?

It happens every now and then without faulter falter.

I do see the commercials, and I see the stores still FILLED with row after row of More, and More DvD's and the BR section still small... USB Jump-Drive section is larger then the BR sections...

DvD's being phased out.... when that happens it WILL NOT be because of Blu-ray.... LMFAO

How do you breathe again?

In answer to the original question:
Sony does of course want to succeed.
But the obvious definition of success involves them doing something that they have not been ready to do.. drop the price.

and in this regard, No- Sony does not want to "succeed" YET.

they will succeed when they are ready. Hopefully after E3, coupled with a winter release surprise that is GT5

Sony tried to use the popularity of the Playstation brand to push along a new format. Thus, if they would have been successful, they would be dominating at to markets: movies and games. I can see why they were so inclined to lose money like they did. But, things didn't go the way they wanted and now, they are paying for it. I'm sure Sony will not repeat the same mistake next gen.
