Forums - Sony - Would you prefer your PS3 to have a DVD player?

Derek said:

Given that there is currently a thread questioning whether 360 owners want BluRay, I figure we can ask you PS3 owners a similar question.  Would you prefer your PS3 to have a regular DVD drive instead of the BR drive?

Think of the benefits:

- MGS5 will not be 100 hours of cutscenes with 12 hours of gameplay.  Kojima simply cannot fit it on a DVD-9 disc.

- Next time you go to purchase a movie, you'll be able to pay for it with a twenty-dollar bill! (And, you'll be able to purchase any movie you want, not just ones available on BR.)

- Reduced load times - we all know this is not BluRay's strong point.

- Price cut!

- Exercise - You'll have to actually get up and swap discs for multi-DVD games!  It's the healthy alternative.

Please feel free to list other benefits as you see them... Discuss!

Sorry if this hurts you or anything, but are you stupid or what?

  • I don't know why you are talking of MGS5 but MGS4's problem isn't its cutscenes. In fact, I don't mind them at all. I can't imagine it being a problem with MGS4 either.
  • PS3, as well as any BD player, can play all DVD movies as well. Well, I suppose it's not technically a requirement but as far as I know all BD players support DVDs and it wouldn't make any sense not to. This is where you went terribly wrong.
  • Load times? They're mostly fine, the only problem is with lazy multiplatform developers. Many good exclusive and multiplatform games have been done without installs or terrible loading times. Anyway, you should really learn more about optical disc drive reading rates. They're not that far from each other actually. Don't know how seek times and such affect the situation though.
  • Price cut? On the other hand the price would be cheaper, and on the other there would be less value. I'm not trying to say BD is good and not bad at all, I'm just saying the price isn't that bad in the end. Well, except for sales, but I don't play sales, I play games.
  • Exercise? What you gain from exercise, you lose from the annoyance. Besides, I doubt it's going to do much anyway. That's no reason, you're only making yourself sound stupid.

No, I wouldn't be any happier. It'd just make things worse. I'm not sure if BD is much of a benefit but in my opinion it doesn't really hurt to have it.

it needs br for future game content.

Stop getting so excited about a Kid Icarus remake... the original NES Icarus sucked.

You know you can play DVD movies on ps3 too ? :)

there won't be a gap of 10mn, the current gap according to VGC adjustments say it's 8.1 mn which was around 7 mn for most time last year. With sudden boost thru 2008 holiday the margin was raised to 8.2 million.

the current trend is set to decrease the gap btn both consoles...to even as close as 6mn, More gamers will opt ps3 4 console of choice considering its both library and the future potential. We r not talking about BR, high definition...instead consoles that deliver games. The PS3 already've a DVdplayer with BR.

@Derek: only two of your points can qualify as sarcasm really, with the last one (multiple discs) actually having been listed as a prefer "collector's" preference on this site.

As for the reading speed it's close, but common opinion is still quite often that the PS3 BR drive is way slower.

And to the topic, if that were an actual question, no.

Simply because I like JRPGs and hope that the extra GBs will give publishers incensive to keep the original language option.

Plus I like how durable BR discs are.

- Reduced load times - we all know this is not BluRay's strong point. - good point again

- Price cut! - who doesn't like that

- Exercise - You'll have to actually get up and swap discs for multi-DVD games!  It's the healthy alternative. - not really a big deal, considering you have to do this with 1-2 games thus far

I think you are on to something...other good things I can think about.

-Sony, who was a year late, would have actually had to spend time making themselves better than 360 at lauch, rather than jsut say "it has bluray, buy it!"

-HD-DVD would have won the HD war. Superior players and a more versitile format despite slightly less space...

BD AV bitrate - 48Mbit/s  vs HD DVD AV bitrate - 30.24 Mbit/s

versatile?? maybe but i dont see which part of it is....superior??...definitely not

No.

Why listen to this guy?
He obviously dosent know what hes talking about, especially since he dissed MGS4

Do you really have to exaggerate that much?

And no I wouldnt like to downgrade my PS3.

Nice try trolling though.

I dont think you get the point. You state that the next time you go out and buy a movie, you can pay for it with a twenty dollar bill (not in my countries case) but seeing as it is a DVD player, you can still go out and buy a DVD for $20 and get anyone you want. I would rather wait a little longer fro High Definition content in loading times and finally if PS3 games were not on Blu-ray, They would drop down and only become pathetic games which Xbox has.
