Why do religion and self-proclaimed ignorance always have to go hand in hand?

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

They don't though. For example, MrStickball is not ignorant in any way, he is very aware of things when you read his posts, and yet he is very religious. I know many religious people who are like that.

The ones who are ignorant are the ones who refuse to listen to facts and it's not really exclusive to religion, it's just that often religion can be a catalyst for ignorance, but it varies quite a lot. I know a few atheists and agnostics who are like that too.

But then again the Kansas board of education would be inclined to disagree with me lol

The issue is that people can, and will be stupid regardless of their background.

There was a poll in the US, when gas was $4.00 a barrel, and it asked the question 'Who is responsible for the gas prices being so high?' - The top answer was George W. Bush at 40%+

The fact is that many people do not understand things very often. Few understand the economy, science, religion, history, and other valuable areas of life.

From my perspective, as a very fundamentalist Christian PoV, I would of gladly slammed the Christians that attacked Nye if the situation was repeated verbatim. They really don't understand the Bible, but they've been preached to by some idiot that takes the Bible 100% litterally, in such a way that it distorts the original context of scripture. The Bible says that there were 2 lights to rule the day and night. Does that mean both create light in and of themselves? The Bible doesn't make that judgement call. It just says that the moon was created to govern the night....Not a real in-depth statement, and shouldn't be taken out of context.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I am a Christian but not a fundamental literalist and this is one of the reasons why I'm not. I have actually been fought with that the world is only 6000 years old because if you add up the ages of the entire Jewish lineage that's what it comes out to. I won't argue however that Adam was the original patriarch of Jewish society but I honestly believe the world is much older (around 5 Billion years or so).

What's sad is the Genesis quote actually makes sense. the difference between "greater" and "lesser" could be meant as the difference between light emitting sun and light reflecting moon.

Sometimes religious people scare me.

I don't get why just because you believe in God doesn't mean you can believe science at all? I mean its pretty obvious stuff.

Nintendo still doomed?

When I read this thread title, I came in here a bit worried thinking that my knowledge was somehow out of date and we realized that the moon doesn't technically "reflect light" from the sun. I was thinking Bill got booed for not having up-to-date knowledge about the subject.

Glad to hear that I'm still keeping up with the times. :P

Lol who knew that the belief in God and the belief that the moon reflects sunlight were mutually exclusive!

God made the sun which shines light on the moon which reflects onto the earth.
