Lone Wolf Series: The Name of the Game
High in the tree tops Marina lay in wait. She had been waiting in the same tree for nearly an hour, stalking her last few preys. Marina knew they were in hiding in close proximity to her position. They thought if they waited for a while that she would give up her post. Unfortunate for them she was not about to give up in the slightest.
Her eyes ran red from the stinging air, refusing to close them in fear of loosing site of the targets. She had come to the conclusion that the last place they could be was behind an old shack, no more then 20 yards away. So the dark haired sniper stayed there in close anticipation, for one of them to make the wrong move.
By the 2nd hour the birds chirping had begun to set in Marina’s mind, weighing on her brain. She shook her head as if to warn the sound off, yet Marina could feel that that was a mistake. When her eyes adjusted back to the position she could see a foot extended from the old withering barn side. The rabbit was about to take flight across the wooded plains. Marina would not have her prey escape. She fired unwearyingly at the leg. The bullet whizzed through the air, startling the surrounding bird nests. The pellet’s destination was only inches away from the target. The foot immediately retrieved itself back behind cover.
“What are you? CRAZY!!!!” yelped Ted, as he held on to what Marina almost blasted off.
“Shit…”Marina whispered under her breath as she reloaded another clip, cocked her gun and reassumed the firing position.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Dammit, TED! Now she KNOWS we are here dude!” Melville explained in much frustration.
“DUDE, she almost took my FOOT!!!” the smaller soldier cried back, now almost in tears due to the shock.
“SHHhhhhhh!!” squawked Alecia. “I knew I should have never come back for you guys, you two are going to get all 3 of us killed.” Alicia face palms her self while shaking her head in disgust. “She was trying to scare us out of hiding, so just calm down guys.”
They all stood in silence for a bit. Their backs were completely plastered against the wall as if they could hide by sinking into it. Restlessness started to kick in.
“Dude, she is not going to budge.”, says Melville.
“Well, neither are we” quipped Alecia.
“She already got Welkin, Largo, Edy, and the rest. She’s gonna get us too” Ted whimpered to himself.
“Don’t SAY that!” yelled Alecia. The emboldened brunette gave him a stern look that begged of his silence.
“I can’t believe she betrayed us like that, and to think I gave her one of my muffins Jann made me”, Melville said with a puzzled look.
“Somehow I’m not surprised. She has always been a lone wolf”, sighed Alecia. “It was more so just a matter of time before we saw the real her.” Alecia peeked from the other side of the barn wall. Her dark brown eye’s could see Marina scowling about the tree tops, not moving an inch. “Dammit…..what would Welkin do?” , the young leader pondered to herself out loud.
“Well he would say something profound about an insect or bird or something” Ted chuckled. Alecia’s eyes widened in inspiration.
“That’s IT!!! Ok, guys, here is the plan…” She began to whisper amongst the two guys.

Marina was starting to become frustrated with the rodents. She kept imagining the whole ordeal being over. For a second, she began to reflect upon her past actions over the last few hours. Many members of Squad 7 had fallen by her hand. At one moment she felt a tad proud of her doings, yet then the sense of loneliness set in. She pondered whether it was all worth it.
Suddenly she heard a peculiar sound. She hastily turned her head around as if to spot its whereabouts.
“KAKAAAAWWWW!!!!” The sound echoed through the trees. The birds became annoyed and started cycling around. A few started flying right into Marina.
“DAMMIT!!!” she yelped.
“NOW” echoed from a short distance away. Marina could see the three rodents scurrying away from cover. This agitated her. Marina fell out of the tree but managed to keep hold of the branch with one hand.
“Not so fast!” Marina warned just as she squeezed the trigger of her rifle. It landed right into the back of Melville who immediately hit the ground.
Marina dropped from her tree tower and gave chase.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“She got Melville! O, we are sooo dead!” cried Ted.
“SHUT UP AND KEEP RUNNING!”, yelled Alecia as they sprinted through the trees. They quickly maneuvered around the logs that impeded their paths. The last remnants of Squad 7 exerted themselves to run as fast and as far as they could. Yet Alecia could still see Marina gaining on them.
“We both can’t make it” Ted clammered out, completely out of breath. He stopped, holding his knees to keep from falling over. Alecia skid across the grounded leaves and turned. Her forceful grabbed Ted by the shoulder firmly.
“Don’t you dare give up on me, be brave.” Alecia blurted out as she forced both of them to continue their pacing.
“O…..OK…” Ted stuttered.
As they continued to run onward they could see their final destination, an old shack. Alecia knew if they could just make it there they would be safe.
“ALECIA, WATCH OUT!!!”
Alecia turned around just to be starring directly at their sniper’s rifle. She could tell that she was homing directly in on her head. Before Alecia could even react accordingly she was being pulled down to the ground by Ted.
“NOOOO!!!” screamed Alecia. She could see the red colored stain on the back of Ted’s uniform.
“I’m……out of the game…..”, smiled Ted. Alecia pulled herself from under Ted’s weight. She turned around and began running for her life again. She had no time to mourn the loss of her comrades. She was now only a few yards away from the target. Alecia hastily lunged towards the door and swung it open. Just as she was lifting her foot to step inside she heard it. A loud thundering sound just a little ways behind her. She could feel the back of her uniform was soaked with a vibrant red stain. Marina grabbed the back of Alecia’s collar and pulled her backwards. There was a hard thud of a body hitting the compacted dirt. Alecia lay there on the ground completely amazed. Marina stood over top of her silent.
----------------------------------------------------------------
“Why Marina?”, begged Alecia. She needed to know what ushered such betrayal.
“I ….am a lone wolf” Marina muttered.
“So you betray your own teammates? We were on your side!” said Alecia.
“I don’t need a team. I work better alone. It is the team that made you all lose. I just wanted to win.” Marina ended her sentence by put a period right in Alecia’s chest.
Marina steps inside the door, walks slowly to a table in the center. Captain Varrot sat there, sipping on tea that was just brewed. Marina calmly took a seat across from her.
“Well done recruit! I can’t say I completely agree with your actions but they proved useful in this exercise. Although, I would suggest playing better with others next time.” said Varrot. Marina smirked at the thought. Cpt. Varrot sounded an alarm sitting next to the tea pot. A loud and alarming sound echoed through the forest.
Suddenly Alecia got up off the hard ground. They could see Ted and Melville making their way towards the shack.
“I’m never going to be able to get this stain out of my uniform” Ted whimpered.
“She plays rough dude, real rough” explained Melville.
Marina took a sip of the tea laid out before her. Alecia stepped inside the shack, her team following behind her.
“You know, that is really not how the game is played…” Alecia scowled at Marina.
Marina replied,” That’s the way I play it.”
