Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Chrono Trigger or Chinatown Wars?

More in keeping with the Japanese script.

The script in the Nintendo DS version of Chrono Trigger is fantastic, don't worry about it, and it by no means justifies playing the craptacular PS1 port of it.

The only question here is whether or not you've played Chrono Trigger before. Have you?

I was going to mention this afterwards.

Many people are upset with the changes, but from what I have heard this DS version is actually more in line with the original Japanese script. Many also say the fault lies on the SNES, PS1 versions and not the DS version.

Considering I'm a translator myself, I very much want translations to be correct. So for that, I'd probably prefer the DS version just for that.

As of right now, I'm leaning more towards getting Chinatown Wars first, and Chrono Trigger later, but I'm not fully decided yet.

I have CT DS and I'm loving it... but if you love sandbox games... which I don't.. GTA CW is a good pick.

I am one of those people. The script just reads better, to boot.

If by "reading better" you mean "being more bland and generic" then sure.

I'm not going to have this argument with you, Words. I found the CTDS script more professional, clean, coherent, and generally readable than the SNES version of the same script. If you didn't, you know, that's cool, but I've been arguing with folks about FF12's script for too long to be willing to carry this out...

...At least, not without having my copy on me so I could make some quotations.

Changes you will see with Frog are things like -

Instead of saying "Crono, thou hast the makings of a great swordsman"

He will say something like "Crono, you’ll be a great swordsman someday"

Regardless of which I may think is better, I will say this: I much rather prefer a proper translation.

Haven't read the posts, but here is my opinion.

If you never played Chrono Trigger, get that fisrt. If you have, then get GTA.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

SNES:

[A frog appears out of nowhere and kills the Naga]

Frog: Lower thine guard and thou'rt allowing the enemy in.

[He sheathes his sword]

Frog: Thou'rt here to save the Queen?  The lair is deep within.  Will thee accompany me?

Lucca: A... a FROG!?  Crono, it's a talking FROG!  I hate frogs!

Frog: My guise doth not incur thy trust...

Frog: Very well, do as thee please.  But I shall save the Queen.

[He walks off, but before he gets to leave...]

Lucca: W-wait!

[She walks towards him]

Lucca: You don't see like a bad... ...uh, person-frog-thing... I mean...

Lucca: Crono!  What should we do?

 - Go with the frog.
 - Refuse.

[When "Go with the frog." is chosen...]

Lucca: I'll just have to handle it!  I mean... deal with... him!

Lucca: What's your name?

[The character-naming screen appears. By default, his name is "Frog"]

Frog: Frog will do.

Lucca: All right… Nice…nice to meet you, Frog.

DS:

[A frog appears out of nowhere and kills the Naga]

Frog: Lower your guard, and you will allow the enemy in!

[He sheathes his sword]

Frog: You've come to save the Queen? The fiends' lair lies within, it would seem. Will you accompany me?

Lucca: You… You're a… Crono, it's a giant talking frog! You…you know I can't stand frogs!

Frog: I suppose I ought not expect you to trust me, looking as I do.

Frog: Very well. Do as you please. But I must save the Queen.

[He walks off, but before he gets to leave...]

Lucca: W-wait!

[She walks towards him]

Lucca: You…you don't seem like a bad frog. I mean, person. I mean…umm…

Lucca: What should we do, Crono?

 - Go with the frog.
 - Refuse.

[When "Go with the frog." is chosen...]

Lucca: Right. I guess I'll just have to get over my…my aversions to slimy—err, moist-skinned-creatures.

Lucca: So, what's your name?

[The character-naming screen appears. By default, his name is "Frog"]

Frog: Frog will suffice.

Lucca: All right… Nice…nice to meet you, Frog.

SNES:

Magus: Ah... The Masamune!!! I bet you're just dying to use it!

[He pauses for a moment]

Magus: The black wind begins to blow... Okay... give me your best shot...

[He turns around]

Magus: If you're prepared for the void!

[They engage in a battle. After a long and difficult battle, the flames around
the room disappear as Magus falls to the ground on his knees]

Magus: W.. what have you done to the Masamune...?

DS:

Magus: Ah, the Masamune… Then you've come for me.
Let us hope no others interfere this time.

[He pauses for a moment]

Magus: Again, the bitter black wind begins to howl… Very well.

[He turns around]

Magus: Come, if it is death you seek!

[They engage in a battle. After a long and difficult battle, the flames around
the room disappear as Magus falls to the ground on his knees]

Magus: Your skill with the Masamune is that great already?

YMMV.

Get GTA first. Its the best game ive played on DS by far.

GTA is a great game but Chrono Trigger is awesome. I advice you to get it first. Didn't you feel it was an amazing game when you played it ? :p
