to get the same performance as on the 360?

Performance isn't the same. Taking datas from an HD is much faster than DVD. Have you tried installing some games on your 360?

Yes I know that but I was talking about the size of multiplatform games... PS3 has the same games.. If they are the same size of the 360 games (6.8 GB) why do PS3 games require a mandatory install of almost the entire game?? Lazy developers?

@ NJ5

The only thing I said is that the 6.8 GB of data can be placed exclusively on the outer part of the disc, which has higher read speed with a CAV drive.

I am sorry, I don't follow you.

If you have a very small game, you could place the data exclusively on the outer tracks, but then it would be better to go for a single layer disc instead (using more inner tracks).

PS3 vs 360 sales

Yeah I thought the 6.8GB limit had more to do with copy protection/DRM?

Also because the Blu-Ray drive of the PS3 is slower than the 360's DVD drive.

I'm not talking about small games which fit in one layer. I'm talking about a hypothetical 6+ GB game.

My point is that if 360's DVD format allows for the DRM part to be put in the center of the disc, with the game data in the outer part, this results in better read speeds for the game.

Burnout Paradise, COD4/Waw , Dead Space, say hi. I know theirs a ton that HAVE a mandatory install, but is that the ONLY way around it? Also notice, Burnout was PS3 lead platform , and Dead Space, and COD PS3 and 360 were separate teams

The PS3 drive is faster on average compared to the 360 drive, some multi-platform games were optimised first and foremost for DVD.

I have provided some info and perspectives here:

Agreed, to understand Blu-Ray you should look at the best results and not the worst results.

Looking at the best results so far, games which required no mandatory installs such as Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Killzone 2 and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune should provide much insight. Interestingly they are also some of the technically most impressive PS3 games around. It seems games like Heavy Rain and Uncharted 2 may further optimise this trend.

When looking at the worst results, you are mostly judging issues originating from former usage of more legacy technology. Blu-Ray being relatively new, requires different approaches to take the best advantage of. Like a single or double, etc threaded gaming engine cannot be expected the get the most out of the Cell processor.

Not counting the mostly OS dedicated hardware threads, PS3 gaming engines should at least be spread over 7 threads and this is only the first step on the long road for achieving optimal performance from the Cell eventually.

However IMO the PS3 Blu-Ray drive load speed is not remarkably fast for the provided storage space (but sufficient still, all the data on a 25 GB disc can be streamed in less than a hour), as for example, however with regard to average seektimes and loadtimes faster than the 360's DVD drive.

The default harddrive in the PS3 is a lot faster and should be taken advantage of in terms of Blu-Ray streaming (/data caching) and can be taken advantage of in terms of pre-installed data as well. This would IMO make sense for often used files.

So, IMO mandatory harddrive installs can be a pro as you can achieve better results. However regarding many 3rd party games it's just used as a quick and dirty workaround to make up for the technology differences between DVD and Blu-Ray disc.

I think I understand NJ5's question. He's asking that if the DVD-9 format is 8.5GB and the FAT (formating/copy protection whatever) chews up 1.7GB of the disc - is the actual game data then stored on the outer most available tracks theoretically increasing the average read speeds from what you've been quoting by virtue of the fact that the inside tracks aren't factored?

Good thing the PS3 uses blu-ray...even though it can't read the discs very fast so you have to install all of your games...

That is exactly what I'm saying.
