Forums - Sales - Sony: Piracy Has Taken 'Big Chunk Of Game Sales' From PSP!

Honestly I think people just don't want to buy PSP games. DS is probably the most pirated console ever and still manages to sell games pretty damn well.

Honestly, look at the markets of each system. I don't think 40 year old moms or little kids would even know where to begin with hacking, or even know it's possible. PSP's market is directly in-line with tech-savy males who would be most likely to hack it. That, and PSP has gained a large reputation for being an easy to pirate handheld.

And the guy is right. It does hurt software. Obviously some people buy it becuase they want to download games, but many people would just as easily buy the system regardless, maybe not right away, but as the software was coming so would these fans.

I disagree.... I think piracy has created a huge chunk of PSPs sold.

Without piracy... these PSPs just wouldn't of sold.

It's like the Ipod.  Is piracy hurting Itunes sales....?  Or is it pushing more Ipods.

Studies seem to show it's the latter.

You don't pirate games you don't want to play. Obviously these people want to play these games, they are just taking the free and easy option. In time, most of these people would have bought one anyway, I believe.

The 40 something moms might have kids in the teens or the kids might have siblings in the teens. If your mom or your brother/sister bought a PSP/DS and you know how to hack it, wouldn't you help them?

On Topic: I guess that's why it hurts PS3 sales. It has not yet been hacked like 360 and Wii.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

I doubt many parents would condone illegal behaviour. And you are already shrinking that group by assuming they have a teen son, who is willing and able to do it, with a parent that allows them to (mine wouldn't). It is also where reputation plays a part - DS may be the most hacked (not sure if it's true) but it certainly doesn't have a reputation for that. When you think of PSP, it's hard not to think of piracy.

Piracy might sell the hardware for those who would pirate (and thereby help to kill profit for developers), but it eats away the platform itself.

The real, long-term money is made from software licensing fees, not the hardware.

Pirating makes the games cheaper for the douche-bags who pirate, but it also disincentivizes the developers and publishers from creating games for the platform.

Sony needs to figure out how to stop it.

Man, sony should fix this issue with a firmware update, but this will be VERY difficult to overcome.

Do you buy every game you want to play?  What if Uncharted 2 cost $400?

Do you buy really expensive food you would like to eat whenever you would want to eat it?  Or do you say "You know... that tastes good but it's too expensive."

i think its good that games r pirated coz original are so expensive!here i can get 15 pirated psp games for the price of 1 original!

Honestly I'd probably do the same if I had the option. Corporations are not non-profit organizations. At the end of the day, they're there to exploit us. I don't mind exploiting them back once in a while.

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

"Do you buy every game you want to play? What if Uncharted 2 cost $400?"

Boy, that's some sound logic.

Actually, its so easy to pirate DS games that people will buy a DS just to do that. The cards can literally be ordered for like 6 bucks. My friend just got one and it works great. On top of that kids have parents that buy them games.

In the case of the PSP. Most people who own one are probably teenagers or people who don't want to spend their money on games. That money could be spent more important things like weed and booze.
