Yakuza 3 only broke even huh? That's... disapointing... considering everyone here thought it sold really well.

Its break even on the sale to date. They can still spend little money translating and shipping to the rest of the world and make profit of it.

QFT

Localization and especially marketing costs are not to be taken lightly.

what marketing?

They'll release a high-profile (it's not Opoona), not Western-accepted game overseas and not spend on marketing? What for? Satisfy fans? Please...

VC got absolutely no marketing. something that will sell less will get less. so.. theyd actually get money back for marketing it since its impossible to spend less than zero. also Y1 and 2 difnt get any either so why would 3?

It had some decent marketing in Japan, and had a very small amount of magazine ads. But those are dirt cheap anyways.

It's what they did with Yakuza 2.

They didn't advertise the game at all? What about localization?Anyways, I sure hope they localize the game at least in the US so I can play it too on my (thankfully region-free) PS3.

I am merely saying SEGA will either release the game along with decent ads and push, or go stiff and keep it in Japan. Releasing it with no advertising is suicide.

25% (aka $15) goes to pay the art and design guys.

20% ($12) goes to pay the programmers and the engineers.

20% (also $12) goes to your friendly neighborhood retailer. EB / GameStop, whoever.

11.5% ($7) goes to a "Console Owner Fee" - ie. whichever one of the Big Boys made your hardware (Sony, MS, Nintendo.)

7% ($4) goes to marketing, and puts Mad World and Marcus Fenix on MTV.

5% ($3) goes to "market development" -- paying for cardboard Standees of the Gears Crew and elbowing other games out of the way for shelf space at your local retailer.

5% ($3) goes to actually manufacturing and packaging the disc.

5% ($3) is spent paying the Man for IP licenses or maybe hiring some big name voice actors. If your game isn't an original IP, here's where you get dinged by Marvel, Disney, or Ray Liotta's agent.

1.5% (just $1) goes into the publisher's pocket.

1.5% (also $1) goes into the distributor'spocket. 0.3% (about 20 cents) goes into corporate costs. Management, overhead, lawyers, etc.

0.05% (less than 3 cents) go into the cost of paying for the Developer's Hardware. Who knew an SDKs can cost tens of thousands of dollars?

That makes 101.55%  lol

But more importantly, that makes no sense  XD

Well, it was suicide. That's why the game sold as it did. (around 50k in NA)

They didn't even bother with English voice acting. And I didn't see ads anywhere. (print or online)

1. SEGA hasn't advertized any japanese centric game they brought to NA. why suddenly start now. 2. i never said programmers get 20%. the company who the programmers works for gets it. (its up to the big guys to decide if they want to give their employees bonus') 3. if the bosses aint making money why are they in a business (obviously you dont see that 20%) 4. you admit not being on the same level

oh dear... you know when rounding percentages you arent alway going to end up with 100%. second grade math FTW!

@outlawauron
exactly my point. They got burned already once, and as they're actually making profit now (even a modest one), why risk going red again?

@Max King
1. See above; they'd risk going red again
2. That's what contracts are for
3. Many companies have closed down, taking their bosses with them; it's a tough world.
4. Of course I am. I live in a country where technology and especially computers/video games/electronics are considered niche/kiddish/subpar. I am a web developer for Christ's sake, I spend less than $100 to complete a project.

@max

Dude, those percentages make no sense. Where are u coming up with percentages for most of those variables? You're telling me SEGA follows that strategy or every publisher follows it?

Employees don't get a percentage of what the game sells. They also get paid periodical wages not after the game starts selling.

And have u every heard of Fixed Costs & Variable Costs?

How old are u?
