Haha, I'd say the same for myself, although I tend to get things done by some miracle either way.

In some ways I consider myself a little smarter than some people based on my knowledge of certain subjects but other than that I'm pretty average.
Pacman taught people to run around in dark rooms munching on pills while listening to repettive techno music and for that I somewhat idolise him.
I'm a bit above average.
I have a habit of knowing the most obscure of facts too.

Its kind of like life , play by their rules or GTFO. Im not a suit and tie man. Despite hitting above average for most of my unit results, i will graduate this term, but i still don't think university is ultimately that encouraging for individuality or new ideas and that disgusts me. Maybe with a post grad ill see things differently, probably not though. |
You are right about conforming to the system part. I experienced this firsthand as I can write incredibly witty pieces, reviews, articles, cases, whatever... but I'm generally told to tone it down next time as it is not scientificy enough. (I once used the word scientificy in an article for instance)
Still, I think that being able to conform to a new system is showing intelligence. The films where a streetwiper becomes a massive CEO or the dumb blond becomes a lawyer is real cute but, in a real situation with highly educated people you would find out that this just does not fly. You have to be able, and this is a skill dumber people do not have, conform to the situation if you want to be accepted there.

Yes; because of my A-level grades and the fact I love the scientific method and learning new things more than most other people I know. I want to study Physics at uni, not to get a job (because real physics jobs are rare and low-paid) but just to learn why e.g. general relativity and quantum mechanics work.
IQ isn't worth anything. It tests your ability to do IQ tests. IQ tests done outside of a controlled environment by a psychologist don't even test that. The ones on the web tell us what we want to hear for advertising revenue.

Umm, probably smarter than the average person, yes. I'm in the process of writing my Ph.D. dissertation right now, and I've been hired to teach a class of undergrads this summer at my university (University of Maryland) on my dissertation subject, history of the British Empire. Generally speaking, they tend not to hire schmoes to teach university courses, so I take that as a good sign that my research is going well.

Above average, the 16+ exams taken by every student in the UK are so ridiculously easy, but yet some people struggle to get Cs, I just don't understand how they could possibly be that stupid
