Forums - Sales - Could ODST break Halo 3's opening record?

I think it has a chance. Some people are saying it won't because it does not have Master Chief. But what it does have is the name Halo in it. Take for instance Halo Wars. I know a ton of people that were pumped for this game before they even knew it was an RTS. For an RTS game on a console it sold quite well. This was due to the fact that it had Halo in the name.

Also, ODST is a stand alone expansion. So most people will view it as a new Halo game altogether.

It's not gonna beat Halo 3 at anything, saleswise. Reasons:

1. A lot of buyers were disappointed with H3 and thus are unlikely to feel the need to rush and buy its expansion.

2. Even a lot of people who like the game aren't going to pay $30-$40 for a couple new maps and a 2-3-hour campaign.

3. This will see a lot of marketing, but nowhere near the Hal-Mountain-Dew levels of the original.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Is that why its still the number one game on XBL?

Last I heard it was 3-5 hours, but Halo is now more of an online experience.

How many buyers did you talk to to come to that conclusion?

@Darklich13: Did I say "Everyone"? Or even "The majority"? Even if five million still do play it online, that means another five don't.

@kowenicki: Who's slagging on it? Did I say that I personally wasn't looking forward to it? Because I a. Even if it's an hour longer than what I said, my point still holds true for a lot of people.

Sheesh.

I am guessing you said that about H2 as well didn't you?  Look how that went lol.

I would guess atleast 1 million day 1 and 2 million first week.   With around 4 to 8 million life time depending on how well its received.

^ no but saying a lot is just as stupid. That's like saying lots of people were disappointed with halo 2 but that didn't stop millions more from buying halo 3.

are you suggesting that 5 million that aren't playing online are disappointed? or what is your point?

I said no such thing after Halo 2. It was the middle of the story, it ended on a cliffhanger, and everyone had to see how it turned out. The main story arc is finished now. I don't think it's unreasonable (or an insult) to say that only die-hard fans will really care about what happened in New Mombasa between 2 and 3. The rumored Halo 4, which would star Master Chief and take the series in a whole new direction with a new plot, is an entirely different story.

It also had pretty much unrivalled multiplayer for its time.

Halo and Halo 2 had no FPS games that could come close to matching their popularity. Halo 3, while a great game, now has to compete with the massively-popular Call of Duty games, as well as (to some degree) Gears of War.

Through all that, I'm STILL not saying that the game won't be highly successful. It'll still sell at least three million copies over its' lifetime. But expecting it to beat the original Halo 3's sales records in any fashion is just ridiculous.

This will sell by the truckloads and people will be dancing in the streets. This game has an insane following.

No it WON'T, really impossible.
