Japanese cars are a lot better then American made cars. How many people will lose their job if they really go bankrupt? Over a million worldwide? Atleast that's what I have heard on the news.

err no... I much prefer American vehicles because they are traditionally better.

I wouldn't say they are better, but they actually are on par these days with a lot of foreign cars compared to how things used to be.

I've worked with plenty of people who are auto technicians. All state that American cars are less fragile to work on then Japanese/Foreign cars. Only cars that arent are the expensive high quality cars like Ferraris, and VW has pretty good quality.

The people who should be the most scared about this, is foreign car companies. The US has been making very competitive cars over the last several years, but contracts with unions have been keeping the costs high.

GM is not going away, it will just now be restructured by the government. Something that should have happened in the first place.

Now, the same cars will be made, but the prices will drop considerably.

@ssj12, when talking about reliability that isn't the case. Consumer Reports has this list of reliability by brand.

Scion
Acura
Honda
Toyota
Lexus
Infiniti
Subaru
Hyundai
Mitsubishi
Kia
Lincoln
Mazda
Mini
Nissan
Mercury
Volvo
Ford
Buick
Porsche
BMW
Suzuki
Audi
Saab
Chevrolet
Volkswagen
GMC
Mercedes-Benz
Jeep
Pontiac
Dodge
Cadillac
Chrysler
Saturn
Land Rover

As you can see American cars suck at reliability.

Wall Street Journal -

BEIJING -- General Motors Corp. would need to build another car-assembly plant in China to meet its goal of doubling its annual sales in the country to two million vehicles in five years, a senior executive said Wednesday.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Well. There goes my dad's pension and retiement plan i'm sure.

Government loves to screw the little guy in situations like this.

Aside from screwing up the economy in the first place, how is the governments fault?

And sorry to hear about your dad.

That's funny, the technicians I talk to keep saying European cars that are actually assembled and manufactured in Europe are in a whole other league. The ones manufactured in Mexico of course fall apart almost as much as chinese products did back in the day.

... so is the Money "Lent" to them now lost to the winds?

This will effect a lot of things...

At least Ford seems to not need the government handouts...

@Kasz: Sorry to hear that... I hope your family will end up just fine.

It should.

The biggest vice my parents have is smoking.  My dad saved a bunch of money.  Lost a lot in the economic downturn but should still be fine.  My dad's response to the whole thing was "It'll just be bad for you since you won't get any inhertiance."

Most other union workers aren't going to be so lucky though.  Most union guys like to buy lots of expensive things because they deals they signed were supposed to take care of them well after they retired.  I feel really bad for the guys who retired 10 years ago or so with no signs at all of this stuff happeneing.

You never blame the customer but according to the big US car companies it was the customers fault, they wanted big cars. Well japan competed for green cars, and then kept improving that tech, while the price of petrol increased, its clear what has ultimately tipped the balance on these companies.

Yea, I have a German car, and it's never once had an issue. I drive the shit out of it too (was up to 135 on the way home last night :p). I also have a GM truck, the 4WD and the transmission have both failed. The Porsche is one year older as well (2000 @56K miles, the truck is 2001@ 55K miles).

As for the truck, I love it. I have a heavy boat, and do not trust a foreign truck to pull it (the Nissan is nice, but still not build well enough for towing). So the truck is the best for the task, just not the most reliable.

The fact that they'll likely restructure the company by dropping the comapnies healthcare obligations and likely cutting pension in half or so.

I mean... the plans for it basically are "Lets restart the company by letting it out of it's debts."
