Forums - Gaming - Should Sony and Nintendo Fear the iPhone?

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

If Sony and Nintendo fear the iPhone, they also fear the monster in their closet and the boogeyman under their bed... Apple is no threat to the PSP and DS. At the end of the day, the iPhone is not marketed as a console, it's marketed as a phone and MP3 player. It's also a calculator, is it a threat to Casio and Texas Instruments? It has a web browser, is the web browser a threat to IE and Firefox?

How many copies were sold?

I have no idea!

While I don't have direct figures for Crash, Koi Pond has been downloaded about 900 000 times and it is below Crahs in the list, so that gives you some idea. It's been downloaded propably somewhere around one million times. I don't know if the price has changed a lot over time, but assuming it has been the same $5.99 all the time and assuming one million sales, it nets about $4.2 million after the Apple cut. That's gotta be some serious return on investment for them!

 Thanks for  adding perspective. :)

At  least games for the iphone appear reasonably priced!

You're welcome :)

The games are usually very reasonably prices, the most expensive ones being $9.99 but the great majority is less than 5 dollars. That is both good and bad, because for the most part you get what you pay for. And sales don't always reflect the quality of the game: Crash is apparently not good, based on the user reviews. For some reason it has still sold well, but I'd rather see a good game sell great and reward those who spend the time to make and polish their games to the max.

It could have something to do with the beauty which is Crash Team Racing!  That is such an awesome game, and people will always remember this.  :)

@Hawking
Sorry nope. While I agree that the iPhone/Touch are viable for gaming they are not gaming devices. This is similiar in nature to a PC. The average PC buyer buys the PC for other than non gaming purposes and ends up including gaming as a part of the others package. The PC is a strong gaming powerhouse because PC have been out longer and are well established.

Handheld gaming devices are already out. So while the iDevice will be fine for gaming they are not in a compitive market. However the DSi and likely DSi2 will be more comparable to the iTouch and in a somewhat compitive market than the iDevice moving into gaming.
