Forums - Nintendo - Punch-Out!! to get big retail push 'Will be a full AAA launch'

Will Punch-Out!! be a bigger hit than we think?

“Punch-Out!! is our biggest Wii launch so far in 2009, and we see it as an important title that will appeal to gamers and families in a similar manner to Mario Kart Wii. It has a great pedigree with the previous titles on the NES and Super Nintendo, and this heritage is faithfully carried across to the new Wii version, along with a host of new functions and features. Punch-Out!! be a full triple-A launch as you would expect from such a long-standing Nintendo franchise, and hopefully we will be looking at a number one position in the Wii charts around the launch of the game.” -Nintendo’s senior product manager for Wii Rob Lowe

Nintendo of Europe has a massive marketing campaign planned, which TV advertisements taking up the bulk of the spending. Even more interesting is a PR campaign that will take legendary real-life boxers and put them head-to-head in Punch-Out!! Wii’s versus mode. This is all part of a marketing tour that should be kicking off soon.

When they first announced it, I thought Punch-Out!! would be one of those 'filler' types of games that are a lot of fun but are only meant to tide you over until the next big thing. But it looks like they're giving this one their all.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

this is a core game, this year was planned to be core focussed. PO is just one of the titles for the trad. market.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I know it's meant to be a core title--it's just that at first I sort of felt that it was a 'Perfect Dark Zero' or an 'Excite Truck', meaning a game that is a lot of fun, but only with the knowledge that something better is coming.

However, it seems like it's going to shatter those expectations.

Yeah I agree kitchensink.. I thought it'd be an Excite Truck or Battalion Wars, a small filler but Nintendo seem pretty intent on pushing this one

Yeah I thought that too.. But it's becoming increasingly obvious that Punch-Out!! is going to be this year's Mario Kart Wii, it's seen by Nintendo as a bridge title and will be marketed accordingly.

If Nintendo states they're serious about marketing the title you better be prepared to see it in the sales charts for a long while.

I'm looking forward to it. It looks amazing and I'm glad they've added Classic Controls.

Wow, awesome. I played the NES Punch-Out!! recently on the VC, and I can't be more hyped! This game is gonna rock, and it's a first-day purchase for me.

Punch-Out!! is gonna be one of those games that chart for the next couple of years much in the same way as Mario Kart

Wow, Brett, you really think so? That'd be amazing, if it did. I've been hoping this'll beat the old NES Punch-Out!! in sales, and I guess it might have a shot, then.
